Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

"Wonderful!" Steven said. "Let us know if you'd like any changes. Is there anything we should be aware of regarding diet? Everyone's primarily responsible for their own meals but people like to share, you see."

Also Steven would absolutely memorize a preference for future reference. No rhyme intended.

“Eggs are fucking disgusting,” Henry told Steven. “Other than that, I’ll eat whatever.”

"Good to know," Steven said. He grinned. "You know funnily enough we've someone who doesn't care for poultry. Sort of a matched set, you two. Though in her case that does mean the chicken came first."

Steven was far too proud of that joke.

Oh, you were getting the judgiest of looks for that one, Steven.

Totally no twitching of the lips that might give away the fact that she found it the tiniest bit funny.

That was fine. Steven was used to Marc's reaction to his humor. He would be proud of himself even if there wasn't a burst of laughter to reward him.

"Anything besides that we can do to help you get settled?" Steven asked. "I know the island can be a great deal to take in at a first go. Marc said you're not terribly familiar with things of a supernatural nature where you're from?"

Said, Steven had grabbed it out of the shared memories because Marc couldn't be arsed to be good at summarizing. One of those.

"Marc would be correct," Henry affirmed. "Nothing supernatural about where I'm from."

Except for how some people could just teleport for no reason, of course.

"We had a bit of an advantage," Steven said. "Where we're from there's people with powers, gods walking about, all that sort of thing. Which isn't to say there aren't things on the island that still manage to surprise us. But it did give us a head start on what seem to be the more unusual aspects for people from worlds without those things."

"People with powers?" Henry asked, doing her best to sound casually curious.

"Yes!" Steven said, easily settling into explanation mode. "In our world there are people who can fly, people who are very strong, people who can do magic, all sorts of things. Marc and I have powers sometimes ourselves. Not now. Just plain old me at the moment. But when we're acting as an avatar of the god of the moon."

Really just when they summoned the suit but Steven felt like that was leaving out the more significant detail of why.

"The... god of the moon." Could she fit more disbelief in that sentence if she tried? Probably not, honestly.

"Sounds bloody stupid, I know," Steven said. "Didn't believe it myself at first either."

"Sounds like something out of a video game."

Which did not make her miss Townes at all, shut up.

"I thought cartoon or movie," Steven said. "Took a while to wrap my head around. Course meeting Khonshu helped. Hard to dispute him being real when he's stood there in front of you."

"Khonshu?" Henry echoed. "Now that sounds like I should be telling you 'gesundheit'."

"Egyptian," Steven explained. "Though yes, it does sound like a sneeze. Or a snore I suppose. He's a bit of a wanker if I'm honest."

Hence Steven having no problem with a relative newcomer making fun of Khonshu's name.

"That's British for asshole, right?" Henry checked.

"Effectively," Steven said. "It actually refers to - erm - a personal action. Very personal, if you understand my meaning."

The expression on Henry's face would be the closest to an actual smile that Steven had seen yet as she brought one hand up to make a gesture that confirmed she did, in fact, understand his meaning.

Steven pointed at her. "That is the one, yes! Ass would just be arse, actually. Not terribly exciting. But you're welcome to it if you care to."

"... Thanks? I think?"

Figures profanity would be the key to cracking that shell.

"You're welcome," Steven said, happy to be helpful.

Well, helpful in a way that seemed relevant to the type of person Henry was. For some reason Kamala and Arden did not strike Steven as being in need of such assistance.

"I'm from London, you see," Steven told her. Not pushing her to say where she was from, just sharing his own information. "Comes n - comes from experience."

Steven had been about to say "naturally" before remembering. Hopefully he'd covered that stumble somewhat well. But it was Steven.

"London, huh?" Henry said. "Cool. I guess."

If she noticed that stumble at all she certainly didn't indicate that she had.

"I used to work at the British Museum," Steven said. Again, not attempting to press Henry for details. Merely sharing his own. "I work at the Museum here now. On Thursdays, usually. Feel free to pop by anytime. No cost to entry. Or - er - obligation or expectation even though it's free."

"I came here from Barcelona," Henry offered, feeling only the slightest of pangs as she did so.

It had been her and her mother's go-to answer every time someone had asked where they'd come from, whenever they'd arrived in a new town. And now- well, it was no longer a lie, at least. For Henry, anyway.

"I hear it's lovely," Steven said. Given the way Henry pronounced Barcelona Steven could guess she wasn't actually from there. But he had no need to press. After all, Marc didn't care to tell people where he was from. "I don't think I've ever been? Do like to travel though. Perhaps one day Spain."
