Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

"Khonshu?" Henry echoed. "Now that sounds like I should be telling you 'gesundheit'."

"Egyptian," Steven explained. "Though yes, it does sound like a sneeze. Or a snore I suppose. He's a bit of a wanker if I'm honest."

Hence Steven having no problem with a relative newcomer making fun of Khonshu's name.

"That's British for asshole, right?" Henry checked.

"Effectively," Steven said. "It actually refers to - erm - a personal action. Very personal, if you understand my meaning."

The expression on Henry's face would be the closest to an actual smile that Steven had seen yet as she brought one hand up to make a gesture that confirmed she did, in fact, understand his meaning.

Steven pointed at her. "That is the one, yes! Ass would just be arse, actually. Not terribly exciting. But you're welcome to it if you care to."

"... Thanks? I think?"

Figures profanity would be the key to cracking that shell.

"You're welcome," Steven said, happy to be helpful.

Well, helpful in a way that seemed relevant to the type of person Henry was. For some reason Kamala and Arden did not strike Steven as being in need of such assistance.

"I'm from London, you see," Steven told her. Not pushing her to say where she was from, just sharing his own information. "Comes n - comes from experience."

Steven had been about to say "naturally" before remembering. Hopefully he'd covered that stumble somewhat well. But it was Steven.

"London, huh?" Henry said. "Cool. I guess."

If she noticed that stumble at all she certainly didn't indicate that she had.

"I used to work at the British Museum," Steven said. Again, not attempting to press Henry for details. Merely sharing his own. "I work at the Museum here now. On Thursdays, usually. Feel free to pop by anytime. No cost to entry. Or - er - obligation or expectation even though it's free."

"I came here from Barcelona," Henry offered, feeling only the slightest of pangs as she did so.

It had been her and her mother's go-to answer every time someone had asked where they'd come from, whenever they'd arrived in a new town. And now- well, it was no longer a lie, at least. For Henry, anyway.

"I hear it's lovely," Steven said. Given the way Henry pronounced Barcelona Steven could guess she wasn't actually from there. But he had no need to press. After all, Marc didn't care to tell people where he was from. "I don't think I've ever been? Do like to travel though. Perhaps one day Spain."

"It's not terrible," Henry said. "Better than some shitholes I've been to."

"I'm sorry you've had to be in shitholes," Steven said. He tried not to make his sympathy too obvious, because he knew sometimes that could be unwelcome to someone not far enough removed from a bad situation. But at the same time it wouldn't have sat right with him to say nothing about how Henry didn't deserve that. "Hopefully we'll be the start of something better."

"Yeah," Henry said without any real enthusiasm. "Hopefully."

"Before I came here it - it wasn't bad but neither was it ideal, I think," Steven said. "There's a fair few of us who had things in our lives that could have been better. It's been good for us. Hopefully you'll find that for yourself as well."

Steven naturally believed Henry would but again he didn't want to push. Especially when it was still her first day.
