Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

Lana was wearing a smart grey jacket and trousers and a dark green shirt, with black boots that might be a bit more clunky and practical than professional for Earth wear. And her lightsaber clipped to her belt.

It was a lovely day, and she was going to enjoy it. And have a burger.

"Hey Lana, I have an important question," Cal said as he made his way over. "Is your Earth class going to involve eating food in the places we're going?" He might be on his third plate at this point.

Lana grinned. "We certainly could. It's not the primary focus, but that is a good way to experience culture. Have you tried the burgers yet? Not nerf, but they're good."

"Yeah, and there's so many things to put on them," Cal said in amazement. "And it's all free, which seems like the wildest part. This place is full of surprises."

"No worries about supply lines and resources here," Lana agreed. "At least not like back home. I'm guessing it's the same when you're from - war throws everything into chaos."

Cal sighed and nodded. It was a little upsetting how some things never changed. "The Outer Rim planets are still suffering, but people are working on it." He wasn't going to mention that it was the Rebellion standing against the Empire, because that didn't seem like helpful information. "It's nice to know some places get to just have it good."

"It is," Lana said, "even if I can't help being a bit envious. Though the Outer Rim is doing fine in my time; they're pretty solidly behind Imperial lines, and Empress Acina is better than some at seeing to her people. It's the planets between the Empire and Republic, mid-rim mining planets and breadbaskets that see the most problems." She growled in frustration. "Why can't they see that destroying them in battle helps no-one?"

She caught herself and sighed, giving Cal a rueful smile. "Sore point; sorry."

"No, I completely understand. War is exhausting, and it feels like no one ever learns from the battles of the past," Cal said. "You go home sometimes, right? After being here, where the biggest thing to worry about is strange children?"

"I do," Lana answered. "I was actually just there. Odessen where I live is peaceful enough, but the galaxy is still at war." She heaved a sigh.

"To make a long story very short, the Empire and the Republic were invaded by the Eternal Empire of Zakuul. A group of us from all over decided to band together to fight. Once Zakuul was no longer a threat, the Empire and the Republic went back to war with each other. Some of us decided we preferred not to, and we've formed our own government, which is a ridiculously complicated thing, especially as while we have treaties with just about everyone, they're still not particularly willing to let go when planets decide to join us."

"This is apparently a little weird when you're a decade removed from these things," Sabine said by way of greeting.

Lana smiled. "It takes some time to get into the swing of things," she agreed. "And it's odd to be on the adult side of things when friends are still on the student side. Though I think you've been spared that, at least. How have you been?"

"Decent enough week, and it's about damn time for that," she said. "How've you been?"

"Busy," Lana said. "I went home for a few days, which is always a whirlwind. Good, though. And yes, very glad the island seems to have settled down briefly." They'd see how long it lasted. "Will you be taking any classes?"

"Not this time ~~because my player's still flaky~~. Is there anything good?"

Teasing, since she could guess Lana had one.

Lana grinned. "I'm teaching Earth tourism. We're going to learn more about different areas of the planet. There's also paintball again, which is always fun. And a philosophy class." Because she was a nerd.

"Nerd."

What, it was why they got along!

"The tourism class does sound good. Have you been to the places or will it be your first time?"

"Guilty as charged," Lana said cheerfully. "It'll mostly be my first time. I'm looking to learn more about it myself as the students do."

"You're going to have a lot of fun with that one," Sabine told her with a smile.

"Oh, I am!" Lana agreed, grinning. "I'll let you know if we find anything fascinating."

"Find me some good art while you're at it."

Don't give people homework, Sabine.

Lana didn't mind!

"Absolutely. Anything in particular?"

"I actually haven't researched anything like that in a long time," she realized.

She was fine. Totally fine. Everything good here.

"I can come up with some things."

Lana smiled. "Let me know. Otherwise I'll come up with something appropriate to each place."

"See, that just makes me wonder what you'd come up with," Sabine admitted.

"Honestly, I have no clue," Lana confessed. "That's what makes it interesting."
