Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

How many fully loaded plates of picnic food could Raiden carry at one time? Well, let's just say the man had skills, and hope that he didn't run into any mishaps on his way to the nearest table.

Thor? Freaking Thor is here too?

Kamala just stood there blinking before sending another picture to her friends as part of a fake selfie.

Oh, no, Kamala, easy mistake, but Raiden had dark hair and a backwards baseball cap apparently permanently attached to his head. He was clearly totally different! Also, completely oblivious to her stealth-selfie ways.

"You got all of that okay?" Lucy asked, on her way over to maybe grab a couple more bottles of water. Just in case she needed them later! You never knew, and it was apparently free!

He looked like he had all of that okay, but it was a lot of plates for anyone!

"Oh, yeah, I'm good," Raiden said. "I got skills."

Wait.

"New girl," he observed. "Hi!"

"Hi!" Lucy replied with a smile and a little wave, reassured by Raiden's assertion (and demonstration!) of skills. "I'm Lucy. How's your day going?"

"Oh, it's going great," Raiden assured her as he set his plates down safely on the table. "I'm Raiden. How's yours?"

The safe placement of those plates actually got a polite, sincerely-meant little golf clap from Lucy. "Less confusing than yesterday?" she offered, after thinking about her answer for a moment. "I'm told that's normal for my first few days, though."

Raiden gave her a little half-bow for the clap, then said, "Oh, yeah. The first few days are a big adjustment for most people. I was lucky--my brother was already here." He indicated where Gray was sound asleep leaning against a tree. "So I already had a pretty good idea of what to expect. But even then...this place will surprise you."

Lucy's expression when she spotted Gray was, briefly, one of wistful envy. She hadn't slept like that in weeks. And in the middle of a party! This whole family had skills, clearly.

"So you meant to come here on purpose, then," Lucy surmised, given the whole brother factor and all. "That also probably helps. Are you from --"

She sort of waved her hand around, gesturing to the ambient everything, and landed on, "-- around here? And now?"

Still weird. She did not believe you people that she'd be getting used to that kind of question.

"I did," Raiden confirmed. "Somebody's gotta keep an eye on Smalls...and yeah, more or less? It's hard to say whether I'm from exactly the same place as a lot of people, because I know some stuff about my world that most people...don't."

"Okay, that makes sense -- I'm from the future," Lucy shared, the expression on her face clearly showing that that was new information and she was still very much getting used to phrasing things that way. "And this doesn't line up with where we were in 2024, either. I'm pretty sure, anyway. What kind of stuff do you mean, though?"

"Oh, you know, demons, vampires, that sort of thing," Raiden told her. "You know, the stuff people go, 'of course that's not real, it's just in books!' about? In some worlds, like mine, it is real, but most people still think it isn't. So..." he shrugged. "Hard to say."

"Huh." Lucy tilted her head, absorbing that, before internally telling herself okey-dokey. "Well, you can count me in with the people who don't think those things are real, where I'm from? But I also don't know how surprised I'd be to find out that they are, honestly."

She considered, and added, "But if vampires and stuff are real where I'm from, they were probably caused by radiation. That's kind of how everything is."

Or, it would be something like that they weren't actually vampires in the truest sense of the word, but it was a cruel nickname bestowed on the irradiated. See also: ghoul.

"Radiation?" Raiden echoed, and then remembered she'd said, "Oh, right. The future. Wish I could say I was surprised humans radiated the planet, but..." Irradiated, Raiden. He shrugged. "That's them for ya, isn't it?" Just determined to ruin it for everyone else.

"I think most people probably want to make the world better," Lucy offered, as a human herself who was raised specifically to rebuild the world -- but at least she did say most. She was learning that it definitely was not all. (And, really, maybe she should scale that back further, consider a many or even just a several.) "But -- it just takes a couple bad ones with enough power, right?"

And sometimes it could be so hard to tell who the bad guys were. They usually thought they weren't bad guys, for one thing.
