Library, Thursday 9/28

One of the gremlins was presenting book recommendations to a group of other gremlins today.

Belle was keeping a safe distance, of course, not wanting a repeat of the Brave Sir Robin incident. She was staying close enough to take note of which books the gremlin was recommending though. It was always nice to add to the list of books she wanted to read.

The one about zombies in the past sounded especially exciting.

Hey, the library. Arden wasn't exactly a huge reader for enjoyment, but she'd fallen into the habit anyway what with 'not having a peer group' or however somebody wanted to say 'grew up isolated under Callista's thumb.'

But her pace into the library was halted with a sharp, "What are those?" that definitely violated library quiet rules.

Luckily the library wasn't terribly strict about noise levels!

"Gremlins," Belle said matter-of-factly. "Usually if you don't bother them they'll leave you be unless they're feeling particularly bitey that day."

"...Bitey?!"

"They bite when the mood strikes," Belle explained. "Their venom is mildly hallucinogenic but it wears off fairly quickly. I was bitten once and survived unscathed."

"So..." Arden said, closing her eyes to pull on inner reserves of chill, "there are gremlins in the library that sometimes bite and make you trip. Okay. This is now a thing I know."

She had really assumed that, like, college was going to be more about avoiding hazing and all-nighters.

"Oh, they aren't only in the library!"

It was important you knew and understood that, Ardennes.

"They live all over the island. I believe they're native wildlife just like the alots and teal deer."

Her eyebrows had apparently just decided to move up to her hairline. They lived there now.

"The whats and the whats and you can just run into an acid-goblin anywhere?"

Gremlin, Arden, please. Urban fantasy protagonists should be precise in their supernatural creature categorization.

"The teal deer just deer.
Small ones that happen to be real. Alots are more complicated," Belle said with a frown. "We may have a book on them. I could search for you if you like!"

"Goddess, if somebody wrote a book that explained this place, I'd be thrilled," Arden said.

"Oh, no." Belle shook her head emphatically. "There's no book that explains everything about this place. I'm not certain one book could. I'm not certain an entire series of books could! I think there was one on the wildlife here that I saw once, however."

"It's a place to start, sure," Arden said. "Err, do I have to fill something out to get a library card or whatever?"

"It ought to be in the system already," Belle said. "The library tends to know things."

Hopefully that wasn't too ominous.

"Like Midnight?" she asked. Then clarified, "The boarding house that's alive. Where I live. Also, I'm Arden. I probably should have said that."

Look at those social skills at work!

"I've heard about the house though I've no experience with it so I can't make a truly accurate comparison. The library certainly seems alive at times?"

Belle shrugged a little. She came from a land full of ogres and fairies and dwarves who hatched from eggs. A magical library was hardly that odd.

"It's lovely to meet you, Arden. I'm Belle."

And Arden was just gonna add a second living building to her list of weird shit about the island. Though honestly, the sentient buildings were among the less brain-breaky things, go figure.

"You were on the shuttle, right?"

"I was! I thought I was going home and I ended up back here once more. It was," Belle said with a grin, "a wonderful surprise. I wasn't truly ready to go back where I came from. Staying here to study was more than I dared hope for!"

"Where're you from?" Arden asked, guessing it wasn't going to be an easy answer like 'North Carolina.'

"The Marchlands, in the Kingdom of Misthaven," Belle said. It was an easy answer! It just wasn't a useful one for someone from this world.

"Another realm entirely, I'm afraid, though I've been here for...nearly 3 years now, I believe?"

But it was way less weird than if she'd said something like some kind of small town in Maine or whatever! Then Arden would have been really confused.

"Okay, so can I ask? How someone from the Kingdom of, um, Misthaven hears about a school on a small island in Maryland?"

Belle might never get to a small town in Maine at this rate!

"My father heard about it, somehow, and sent me here to protect me from the Ogre Wars," she said.

Very normal sentence. She hadn't even mentioned the magic beans!

We're on the last day of library orientation and book talks today!

And we just got a kid to read Dread Nation because it's awesome.

You know Jane was on my short list, right?

I find this information absolutely SHOCKING.

I know, it's so out of my usual wheelhouse!

Idk when I became the zombie player, BUT HERE WE FUCKIN' ARE.
