Phys Ed; Thursday, First Period [09/07].

Call him crazy, but Gladio was thinking it felt pretty good to be back in the gymnasium again. Maybe it was just the promise of another semester of subjecting hapless ~~victims~~ students to at least an period's worth of physical activity each week. Maybe it was just that persistent aroma of plastic mats and stale sweat and the promise of squeaking tennis shoes on the gym room floor, but he was feeling pretty psyched to get started.

He'd even gotten a shiny new whistle for the occasion, but that wasn't all that was new, as was to be revealed as soon as everyone in the class was there, and Gladio gave a little nod (and maybe just faint extra grin directed at no one in particular, really) before getting started.

"Alright," he said, "hey, everyone. And welcome to this semester's phys ed class. I know you all know me because I know all of you, so we can probably skip the introductions and get right into the good stuff, and that's the first day physical challenge and assessment."

Oh, and that was a rare grin from Gladio, one that unabashedly stretched from ear to ear.

"But before we get to that," he said, gesturing toward the neatly stacked clothes on a fold-out table beside him, "your gear."

He figured that would be a more appealing word to use than uniforms, but, really, providing neutral-colored shorts, tanks, sweats, and cover-ups for the students had been an elegant solution to the wide variety of clothing people would be rolling in on, although everyone was on their own for footwear. If it helped, too, Gladio was already kitted out in the new FU branded sweats, and, hey, at least you knew they were brand new, too, right, and hadn't been just sitting in a storage closet somewhere for who knows how long.

"So suit up, stretch out, and we'll get started with some standard drills to see where everyone's at."

Considering the class roster? This could get interesting.

Find some gym clothes in your size, get changed, get warmed up, and try not to dread exactly what sort of things "physical challenge and assessment" might entail.

Nell took a pair of sweats, a tank top - just for some additional coverage under the cover up - and said cover up before retreating to the locker room to find a private place to change. It felt very strange to have her legs so clearly looking like, well, legs in front of people. But she'd worn overalls back home sometimes, albeit John's far too big ones, and anyway no one from the church was here to judge her and it made sense to wear them for this.

All of which was to say that a somewhat uncertain Nell got changed and came back out.

And, of course, since Gladio's decision to go with gym uniforms was very much done with careful consideration to his students and their comfort level with certain things, he wasn't at all surprised by Nell's hesitancy and uncertainty about them. But when she came back out, he had to grin at her with an unmistakably fond pride, which was, of course, only strengthened by just how dang cute she looks, too.

He then offered a firm, approving nod to go with that grin.

He might have said something as well, but, well, he was her instructor, he should at least try to keep it professional.

This was...at least not too bad a start. And Jon was grateful for the lack of horridness of the clothes.

He had bought decent trainers, too. Though they still had a bit of new-shoe stiffness.

He'd just focus on that and not the dread.

The first assessment is the easy one! Laps and sprints! Gladio's got a stop watch out to time how everyone does with a few laps around the gym, and then it's time to set up some sprints at various lengths. Remember! It's not a competition, it's just to get a good idea of where everyone in the class might be!

Alara quite enjoyed running and so she completed the laps relatively easily and in good time.

Endurance Nell had in spades and while she probably wasn't the fastest in sprints, she was still pretty quick.

Jon...look, Jon could speed-walk with the best of them, after years of keeping up with taller people. He could even outpace them!

Running...not so much. Unless it was for his life. Sometimes not even then.

He finished everything? That was about the best that could be said of it. He was panting and wobbly at the end of it, and it hadn't been terribly fast, but he did do it!

And now for the next batch of exercises, surely filled with all of everyone's favorites! But Gladio's going to expect everyone to try at least a few sets of each of the following: sit-ups, push-ups, chin-ups, and jumping jacks!

Try to get to at least ten each; twenty if you're feeling ambitious!

This was a bit more challenging for Alara, she didn't normally try these exercises but she still pushed herself as best she could with the different sets. She didn't quite get to twenty but she got pretty close.

Chin ups were the only real challenge, mostly because she had never done them before. The others were easy.

Jumping jacks, Jon could do. Well, ten, anyway.

Sit-ups were...interesting, when you were missing ribs. They felt really weird, and he kept stopping and grimacing in the middle of them.

Push-ups were a challenge. Look, if you gave him long enough he could probably do them all, but you'd be waiting a bit.

Jon looked up at the chin-up bar. Then back to Gladio, unimpressed. "Is climbing up there part of the test?" Look, he might not be any shorter than Nell, but after all the rest, he was grumpy and felt there was a point to be made here for less-than-gargantuan people.

Oh, come on, Jon! It wasn't that far up there! Gladio knew he'd be working with ~~normal sized omg~~ short people today!

Which meant he was meeting that grumpiness with an unapologetic grin.

"Need a boost, Jon?" he offered.

For the last assessment, Gladio was leaning toward a rope climb, but, remembering that at least one of the students had super-strength and a vague recollection of when he used to teach this class and some concerns that lead to about the rafters the ropes were tied to, he instead brought out a rock climbing wall instead, with varying degrees of difficulty present. There's a bell at the top of the wall, and, once you ring it, you're free to go at the end of class....just remember to cool down with some stretches first before hitting the locker rooms!

Alara was definitely grateful about the activity being a rock climbing wall, especially after some previous incidents.

She was able to make relatively good time as she got to the top of the wall and rang the bell as she did.

Nell felt very strange that people could watch her from beneath as she climbed, especially in pants, but she certainly had the arm strength and dexterity to climb the wall without too much difficulty.

Jon sighed. He eyed the wall. His arms already felt like noodles. He went to get a juice. He'd come back to the wall in a few minutes, maybe, when he'd be less likely to fall on his face.

Who will very likely be hanging out after class to do a little of that rock climbing himself.

Nell sat on one of the mats when she was done to watch and encourage anyone on the climbing wall who might need a little encouragement. And if she was still there when the others had gone off to change, well, what of it?

And, well, if Gladio was going to then come on over to that mat and lower himself onto it beside Nell (whether or not the faint grunting that went along with the action was performative or incidental might be anyone's guess), then what of it?

"Good work out there," he said, offering over a bottle of water before he settled in, leaning back with his hands behind him for support.
