Today's games were not being held in the park, which should have been a red flag. Fortunately, Anakin has provided a red flag!

At the end of a very gross-looking wooden pole danging over Serenity Cove.

"Today you're all out of for yourselves," Anakin yelled from the top of recycled scaffolding, which had a 40-foot long greased up telephone pole balanced between it about 20 feet up. "Many thanks to our local bars and restaurants for providing the lard, grease, fish guts, Crisco and bacon fat to really lube this thing up."

Beaker, covered in said grossness, looked decidedly less grateful.

"The rules are simple," Anakin said. "Whoever gets across the pole and reaches the flag wins all you can eat at Mooby Burger for a week!" Whether Mooby Burger was a good prize or not was entirely up to the winners. "You may walk, run, or slide your way across, but you may not use supernatural powers."

"And thank you in advance for volunteering!"

Which was news to those volunteers.

"Pick up your t-shirts--" Anakin did not realize that his shirts were a Philadelphia sports reference, "--and listen for your names!"

Oh boy.

"Vi, Eleanor, Beaker, Summer, Isabella, Steve R, Guillermo, Jon, Beta, Stark, TJ, Eddie, Jane, Graham, Belle, Steph, Steve M, Libby, and Alara! Come on over!"

"How," Steph asked out loud as she pulled the shirt on, "is this somehow even worse and grosser than last year's grease-fest nightmare?"

"Skywalker's an overachiever?" Steve replied, grinning.

"I hate it, thanks," Steph said plaintively in what could not possibly be described as anything other than a whine.

"I think that's the part that brings him the most joy," Steve decided. "The look of dawning horror on our faces every week."

"Do you think he actually does the evil genius laugh?" Steph wondered.

"Probably when he goes home," Steve said. "He already has the cape. That's pretty evil adjacent."

"With the unnatural dramatic billowing?" asked Steph. "Totally."

Sorry not sorry, Anakin.

"Even when the wind's not blowing," Steve murmured. "Do you think he has fans?"

"I mean, probably," Steph said, half distracted by staring at the goopy conglomeration of horror on the pole. "Wait. The wind kind, or the people kind?"

"Definitely the wind kind," Steve said.

"Oh, in that case definitely yes, but I think that goes in either case," Steph decided.

"Weirder people have fans," Steve said with a little laugh. "I'm not making a joke at Clint Barton's expense, but know that I'm thinking of one."

"Ouch, dude," Steph said with a laugh of her own. "Harsh. Presumably."

She glanced back at the pole. "God, this is going to be an experience."

"Because he's had a year to make it like that," Vi said. "At least there's no pigs this time?"

Steph gave her a pitiful look.

"This is what it's like to play at my table, huh?"

Vi moved to wrap her in a hug. "Do you really want me to answer that?"

Steph snickered. "I mean, I think you just did," she said, hugging Vi back. "Except mine is completely theater of the mind, thank you very much."

"Pretty sure props wouldn't be appreciated," Vi said, leaning in against her. "Least not like this."

"Yeah, I have better ways to be evil than that," Steph replied. "That don't involve people having to make sure they show up in their least favorite clothes."

"Or even less than that," Vi said as Isabela strolled past in barely there undergarments. "How is she not falling out of that?"

"Superpowers. Has to be," Steph said, staring just a little bit because she was only human, okay? "It sure as hell isn't compliance with the laws of physics."

Vi wasn't going to judge, since she was doing a little staring of her own. "Yeah, superpowers."

Steph kept an arm around Vi's waist and shrugged. "I mean, come on, is there any, literally any, other possible explanation?"

Vi rested her head on Steph's shoulder. "None that I can think of."

Steph let out a pleased little sigh. "So, ready to kick some ass for the both of us? Because we both know I'm sure as hell not getting anywhere on this one."

Aw, such adorable optimism.
