Totally Safe Science with Beaker, Tuesday, May 9, 2023

There was a short, felt-covered Muppet in a lab coat at the front of the Danger Shop today. He hadn't been transformed from something else, that was just how Beaker looked.

"Meep meep meep meep meep!" he proclaimed, gesturing with his hands, then holding up one finger and reaching for a piece of paper. "Meep meep mee meep mee," he began reading, looking as annoyed as a person with non-blinking eyes could look. "Meep meep meep meep meep meep--"

This went on for a while. It was a legal disclaimer disavowing the school of all liability should the participants of this class catch fire, lose limbs, gain limbs, or turn into a new element or form of matter. Someone at the School Board had Learned Some Things from last summer's class.

"--meep!" Beaker finally concluded, tossing the sheet of paper away.

So, that was all terribly clear, right, class?

He pulled himself up onto a stool so he could be seen over the lab table. "Meep meep mee!" he said, pointing to the rain outside. "Meep meep meep meep meep!" He held up an umbrella and scoffed at it. Clearly this class would be able to make a better rain deterrant than a mere umbrella!

"Meep meep meep," Beaker said, pointing to a variety of objects that could--if you squinted--be used to make some kind of rain protection machine or outfit. "Meep meep mee!"

He dramatically pushed a big red button...and now it was pouring in the classroom.

No one was really surprised, right?

Eleanor, who was still very new to all of this, bless her heart, was definitely surprised, because just when she was starting to think she had a hang on just what she'd gotten herself into with this new school....this happened, and she was still sort of boggling at all the meeps to even immediately noticed that she was being rained on. Indoors....

Eventually, though, she just sort of closed her eyes a little and turned her face into it, because it felt...kind of nice, actually, but she always had been partial to the water.

Gray had fallen asleep at some point during the meeping and now was sound asleep and getting very wet. Oh, bother.

Connor didn't know how his name had gotten on the roster for the class. And he was equally mystified by the meeping Beaker. This was definitely a Fandom thing.

"What is the meaning of this?" Sam demanded. "Beaker!"

Travis definitely wasn't late signing into his first class of the summer I don't know what you're talking about was at the back of the class, dressed in his FFD uniform, with a fire extinguisher and a very unimpressed look on his face.

When it started raining he heaved a sigh and pulled a poncho from his pocket. He put it on, tugged the hood over his head, and then continued to sit at the ready with the fire extinguisher.

Look. He'd met Beaker, okay?

Dang. This weather was going to play havoc with Miguel's plan for popcorn each week. Oh, well.

He pulled his mask on and just sat there.

(Look, he'd taken this class before. There was no way he wasn't wearing his suit every week.)

Beaker, you weirdo, now Sam was a wet Muppet and nobody wanted a wet Muppet. Sam was also an angry Muppet and nobody wanted an angry Sam.

Well. Maybe Beaker wanted one. Who could say what Beaker wanted? Beaker's mind was a mystery.

Sam was grumbling and seriously considering holding Beaker over his head to block the water. Too bad Beaker was so skinny.

Sam was getting a little bit of side-eye from Travis.

Look, one guy made of felt was one thing. But now there was a felt guy and a felt bird in the same class.

"You're not prone to spontaneous combustion too, are you?"

How many fire extinguishers was he going to need here, Sam?

Miguel could absolutely do this! A localized antigrav like the foils on his suit - not enough to raise a person, but enough to throw off the rain - should work great.

Of course, it probably meant the people near him would get wetter; there was a reason no-one used that sort of thing on a regular basis even in his time.

And it was possible it might behave unpredictably if Beaker got involved, but that was a given.
