"Welcome back to yet another week," Lana said, leaning against her desk. "This week, I'd like to investigate something that's controversial among the Jedi of my era - attachments. We've touched on it before, in regards to the line in the code about passion, but it's been the subject of much debate whether or not Jedi should be permitted families, marriages, children, and so forth.

"Now, when you consider that Force sensitivity does tend to run in families, you can understand that outright forbidding children is somewhat counterproductive to your order. Nevertheless, it's rather frowned upon to have and raise children as a Jedi. Similarly, marriages are rather strictly overseen to ensure they're in compliance with the Code. Why do you think that might be, and how would you go about it if you were on the Jedi Council?"

This should be fun. She would absolutely tape this and bring it back home.

"They are, yes," Lana said. "The children of Jedi I'm acquainted with were given to the order as a whole to raise, or to other individual Jedi rather than their parents. They've had...varying opinions on it." Ask Theron how it had worked out for him.

"Although," she continued, "I was brought to the Sith Academy as a child for training and rarely spoke to my parents after that. Jedi and Sith born to non-Force-sensitive parents often are. It's a matter of training and containing damage." She shrugged. "And frankly, indoctrination on either side, if I'm being honest, but there are at least reasons for it."

"Okay, I can see needing to make sure someone with abilities needs to be around people who can help them gain control, but..." Charlie shook her head. "Kids need love. I mean, I can totally see things getting out of control if you're not careful. I mean, I certainly wreaked enough havoc after my abilities started, but I sure as hell would have created more if I'd been taken away from my family."

"For my part, I can only say that I had plenty to occupy myself with and rarely missed my parents," Lana said. "The Sith Academy can be brutal. I understand the Jedi temple isn't quite as fraught, but the Jedi I know are somewhat driven and focused. I'll try to get one of them to come in and answer questions later."

"That only makes me more sad," Charlie said.

"Which part?" Lana asked.

"That you didn't even miss your family."

"Is it?" Lana shrugged again. "My parents were good enough people, but they were prominent entrepreneurs in an Empire that was at war. I spent more time at school than with them even before I became Sith."

Charlie thought about the Gale family - huge with relatives bursting out of the seams. Much as she liked having some space from the insanity on occasion she couldn't imagine not having them. Yes, even the Aunties.

"That is so different from my home life that it's hard to wrap my mind around it," she said finally. "But I wouldn't want to trade for it, no matter how nuts things can be when all the extended family is together."

Lana smiled. "I suppose a lot of it is what you're accustomed to. I think I horrified some of my fellow students with talk about my Academy days, but it was simply the way it was for me. To bring this back around to the class topic, some of what the Jedi do seems ridiculous at best and horrendous at worst to me, but for some of my friends, it's simply what they grew up with."

"I suppose," Charlie said. "But to me it seems kind of like saying that they don't realize how abusive something is because it's what they know."

Lana hummed in thought. "Perhaps? I know if I were to create my own academy, I would do things very differently than I was brought up with. And the Force enclave we're building back home is different from that and different from the Jedi temple. So I do think it's safe to say most of us weren't entirely satisfied growing up either way."

"I suppose that's something," Charlie said.
