Creature Languages, 4/24, period 4

There are books about animals, including some written in creature tongues, piled on every available surface in the classroom.

"Hello," Dream says. "As promised last week, you have today and Thursday to work on your final projects for this class. There will be a final quiz on Monday, May 1, and then the projects are due May 4. They should be short and possibly handwaved accounts of a conversation you had with a creature whose language you have learned this term, and what you learned from them. If this poses a problem for you, please let me know, and I will suggest an alternative assignment."

He nods to a pile of papers teetering on the top of one of the stacks of books. "That should give you some ideas as to what to speak to the creature about. They are suggestions, not mandates."

Possible Topics to Address
1. Most creatures have some natural enemies. Why is that? How does the creature you are writing about feel about his or her enemies?
2. How is the creature's language adapted to its habitat? For example, why is Lobster so different from Spider?
3. What is the role of parents in the creature's culture?
4. What is the creature's favorite work of art by his or her species? Why?
5. What does the creature wish humans understood about him or her?

Molly reviewed her notes for the quiz while thinking about what animal she wanted to interview.

Blair bounced over and took the seat next to Molly, dropping a bag of pastrys from J,GOB on her desk.

Molly grinned and opened the bag to peek inside. "What's in here?" she asked because you never know, it might not actually be baked goods.

It's poo! Flaming poo!

"Donuts, muffins and and a cupcake." Blair grinned. "I couldn't resist the cupcake. It had sprinkles! I have a weakness for sprinkles."

Molly reached into the bag and pulled out the cupcake and held it out to him. "Here are your sprinkles then," she said.

Blair shook his head. "No, these are for you. Sprinkles should be shared with others in order to spread the happiness."

He mumbled a little under his breath. "Plus I ate two of them on the way back to school."

I don't know if I trust you after the flaming poo comment.

Molly giggled and happily started to lick the frosting, and the sprinkles, off of the cupcake. "Thank you," she said between licks. "I love cupcakes."

Guess what the cupcakes are made of?? ;)

"Who doesn't love cupcakes?" Blair grinned. "They're all fluffy and cake-y but in a convenient paper cup that's easily transported. Plus...sprinkles."

"Exactly," Molly said and continued to lick the frosting off. "Plus, a handheld frosting delivery system." She grinned.

"So, what creature do you think you'll interview for your project?"

"It's a toss up. My best language is probably dragon. Or maybe subtext conversation with Lord Vizzle snake. So I could do those." Blair shrugged. "Or I could concentrate on a language that I'm not as comfortable with. I never got the hang of bird and my monkey is...well, you know."

"What about you?"

"I'm still thinking about it," Molly said. "If I go with the one I do best in, it'll be rat. If I try for one I'm need work on, it'll be spider or dragon. Or snake. Or shark." She grinned and shrugged.

"Then we need to actually find and talk to a creature." Blair silently ruled out monkey as an option for his paper. "Which really makes me wish we had learned dog. How easy would it be to just go say 'hi' to Sean?"

"Or Vladdie. I suppose I could just interview Mr. Neilson, but I'm guessing that others might do that too."

Blair nodded and didn't mention that he wasn't going to be one of the ones interviewing Mr. Neilson.

"Maybe you could find a rat in the woods. Do rats live in the woods?"

Molly shrugged. "I don't know about the woods. I do know there are some down in the sewers though. I saw plenty of them when Cam and I went down there looking for Darla."

"Oh." Blair blanched a little. "Well, maybe we should go sewer diving for rats and snakes. Get both projects done at the same time!"

Blair wondered if slugging through sewers looking for vermin counted as a date...and if he needed to bring flowers.

Molly looked at him in surprise. Visiting the sewers really didn't seem like Blair's thing. She had actually been thinking about asking Cam to go back down there with her. But, if Blair wanted to, he could go with her.

"You're sure you want to?" she asked.

"I'd love to go with you." Blair smiled. "When should we go?"

"I don't have any classes tomorrow until Archaeology. We could go in the morning. If you're not busy."

Re: Classwork, Creature, 4/24

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Blair nodded. "That's my first class tomorrow too, so I'm free. Looks like we're heading to the sewers tomorrow morning!"

Re: Classwork, Creature, 4/24

Molly smiled. "We should go early enough that we'll have time to get back to school and clean up after.

"Oh, and you might want to wear clothes that you don't mind getting ruined. I had to throw away one of my hats last time. And make sure to wear sturdy shoes with thick soles. You don't want anything poking you in the foot. Or biting you. And long sleeves too. It's easier to knock any critters that land on you off your clothes than your skin."
