An Introduction to Zoology - Friday, 1st Period

“This week we’re going to start looking into what the animal kingdom is and how it is classified,” Cutter began that week’s lecture, he handed out quite a few detailed sets of notes and then once that was done he stood at the front of the classroom, “all animals are members of the Kingdom Animalia, also called Metazoa and they are classified according to what characteristics they have, what distinguishes these animals from the Kingdom Monera, which includes bacteria and algae among its members, is that animals are multicellular and they rely, whether directly or indirectly on other animals for their nourishment,”

“These classifications for animals,” Cutter continued, “include whether they have a backbone or they don’t, or if they are cold or warm blooded,” he added, “there are seven major groups overall in the classification system, Kingdom, Phylum or division, Class, Order, Family, Genus and species,”

“For our class next week, I would like you to prepare a report on an animal, using the above classification system,”

This was definitely a lot of information and Jo tried to keep up with taking notes but she was going to have to look up some of the terms later on when she worked on her report.

After class, Kurt hung around. He had a question to ask but was still a little unsure about asking in front of the class.

"Professor Cutter?" he asked. "I was just curious. Humans are classified as animals, aren't they?" Kurt was pretty sure that was right, but it had been a while since he had done much other than the training and all at the Academy back home after all.

"So, the paper could be about primates or even humans?" Kurt hesitated a moment because he still thought this was a silly line of thinking, but he still wanted to ask. "See, Mutants, like me... we're considered an offset of normal homo sapiens. We are a new 'type' of human, according to some people. Thought it might be interesting to do something about Mutants and all, since most people don't have people like us back in their worlds..." Kurt trailed off, and gave a shy shrug.
