Life Skills; Monday, First Period [01/02].

Class that morning (and probably most mornings) was being held in the Danger Shop, although it was set up to look just like any other classroom in the school, because that would never not be funny to Summer. Plus, it never hurt to keep some of the students who were in the know about the DS on their toes a little, and it never hurt, even with a first introductory class, to have that little extra cushion of safety just in case anything did get really weird.

Summer herself was leaning on the front of the desk at the front of the classroom, looking over the gathered students, faces both familiar and not-so-much, with a faint smirk on her face. "Welcome," she said," to the first class on the first day of a new semester, or, as I like to call it, probably way too early to ever be dealing with one of my classes, but they seem to want to put it right out there and out of the way right out the gate. This time around, we're going to be going over Life Skills, which is an extremely broad topic that can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and we're going to somehow try and tap into all those things this semester with this class.

"For those of you who don't know," she continued, pressing a hand to her chest, "my name is Summer, I'm going to be your teacher for this class, and I hope my experiences with life in general can translate into some helpful skills for you all to learn. And for those of you who don't know, the first week of classes are usually just for introductions, and we are not going to stray from that trend, especially since none of you are overly sick of them yet. Not only that, but in this class, it'll also be kind of helpful, so I can know where everyone is, and whether or not I'll be steering this class more toward...like...changing tires and accounting, or, like...how to survive in a hellish post-apocalyptic landscape or defuse a bomb before you're blown to smithereens.

"Hopefully," she flashed her eyes around the room to gauge general reactions to that range of possibilities, "we'll find a good balance of all of it. But that's mostly what today is going to be for: going around, introducing yourself, and letting me know where you're from, what you like to do, what you're hoping to get out of this class, if there's anything in particular you'd like to learn or that you think you're already really good at, that kind of thing, just so I know where everyone's currently at.

"And then," said Summer, with a faint grin as she pushed up from the desk and moved around it, to pull a box out from behind it and set it on the desk with a very light and delicate thunk; reaching in, she pulled out a small, basic cell phone, "we're talking phones. If you have one, great. If you don't? Oh, boy, are we in for it today!"

Amicia had spent most of the past day in her room, staring out the window. She had no idea of where she had wound up, nor how they knew her name, but she had not been threatened and it was hard– very hard– to care beyond it.

Now she was in the place she had been told she should be today, and let all the English wash over her.

It's time to go around the room and let your teacher and fellow students know just who you are, and what you're hoping to get from this class, because, good god, 'life skills' could mean something very different for one person as it does to the next. Give your teacher some idea of what she'll be working with here!

Amicia waited until several others had handwavily gone, if simply so she could get some sense of what was being asked of her.

"I am… Amicia de Rune," she said slowly, carefully. "I am from France. Aquitaine. Not… now."

And that was as far as she managed before she ran out of her small collection of English words, and she fell silent.

"It's nice to meet you, Amicia," Summer offered, with a small, softer sort of smile, because, yeah, as far as the range of familiarity of faces in her class this time around, hers was way on the not scale, and she had noticed just a fewwwww particular things about her as she babbled on at the beginning of class. Not to mention the accent and the stilted way of talking. "And welcome to to the class. Is there anything in particular you're hoping to learn more about?"

"Hi, I am Kurt Wagner," Kurt said, pausing to give a big grin and wave to the room before turning back to Summer. "I'm really excited to be taking Summer's class, but as far as what skills I hope to learn...." he thought for a moment. "Really, anything that might help me later on, whether I end up as part of the X-Men, I stay here on the island, or... or start a family of my own or something someday." And yes, there was a thankfully invisible blush spreading across his face just then as he gave a slightly awkward grin.

"So, in other words," Summer couldn't help noting with an amused snort, "anything, everything, all of the above. But that's actually good, that gives me some wiggle room. But welcome to the class, Kurt. I'm sure I can find something to teach you to fit those super tight restricted expectations."

"Vi." And if it wasn't the most enthusiastic introduction Vi had ever given, it was at least not overly hostile. She shrugged. "Don't know. Not cooking."

So that was a hostile, no, judgemental, yes.

"I'm Gray," Gray said. "I guess I want to learn how to do...like around the house stuff? Like cooking and...basic keeping your house from falling apart, maybe? My brothers tend to just do things without--for me because I fall asleep in the middle of projects, but I want to be able to help. When I'm not asleep. And a lot of it seems a lot easier these days anyway." A very normal modern teenaged thing to say there, Gray.

Just in case, after a beat he added, "I can't drive a car in real life because I would fall asleep and someone would die." In case it came up.

"Hi, I'm TJ." She waved. "I don't drive and I'm from modern non-apocalyptic Earth, but accounting and bomb-defusing both sound good. My school back home seems to get attacked a lot more than this one, and when my dad tried to teach me budget stuff it involved, like, writing checks.

Nobody wrote checks these days, Kurt.

“I’m Josephine Jones, I go by Jo,” Jo said when it was her turn, “I’m from Southwest England and it’s 1954 for me,” she said and paused, “I’m …I’m trying to get better about doing things for myself,” she settled on, “before I came here I didn’t really know how to do most basic things, my family …um …have servants, they do most things at home,” she admitted, feeling rather awkward about revealing so much about her family’s wealth.

"I'm Belle," said Belle as she glanced around the room. "I suppose I would like to learn things that could be practical here and at home. I don't really know how to cook anything, to start with. And I'd like to be able to live on my own, eventually."

"Alright," said Summer, nodding, once the last student had gone. "Good to meet you all. Now on to our first lesson, which I'm sure is a recap for most of you, but these little guys," she reached in to pull out one of the phones and held it up, "is practically your lifeblood in functioning in this specific day and age. Calls, texts, looking up information, listening to music, ordering food or portals through apps, playing games, watching movies and videos, organize your calendar, calculate something, need a flashlight? Boom. All here, in a device that'll fit into your back pocket.

"I'm going to handwavily because omg go over some of the more useful functions of your average cell phone so everyone is at least on the same page. If you already have one, great. If you don't already have one, feel free to grab one from the box and keep it. If you already have one and want a second one for reasons I will definitely not be asking about, also feel free to grab one. They're here for you guys. So let's do that so you can all follow along, and we'll get into it."

Feel free to ask questions about specific things, steer Summer in a direction of phone usage you're most interested in, start exchanging numbers with your classmates if you haven't already and start practicing your texting skills. You've got the rest of the class period to learn about and dick around on your phones. Use it!

Kurt had his phone, simple as it was. He knew the basics of using the phone, camera, video, and such. Texting and all was still a bit of a challenge, but that was kinda what happened when you had only three fingers to begin with, and an accent that made voice-type apps spazz out at times. But he was getting better at the whole typing on the phone thing, though he was still a far cry from a speed texter.
