"Hello," Anakin said, flashing the class a small smile before leading them into the Danger Shop, which had been set up like a very stuffy diplomatic reception. "Welcome to the part of diplomacy you see most in movies. This is where people extract information and provide distractions for espionage."

Don't think he hadn't been paying attention to last week's discussion.

"But the vast, vast majority of your time will be spent drinking substandard drinks and eating a variety of canapes while not looking bored to death by small talk," Anakin said, "so that's what you will be practicing today. Start at least two conversations with your fellow students. Topics must be confined to: the weather, whether they have anyone visiting this upcoming weekend, and any pets they may have or used to have."

He smiled. "Enjoy."

"Well, he's evil," Gray said. "So." Yeah. "How about this weather we're having?"

"Evil, got it," Charlie said. "Steering far clear. The weather is lovely for this time of year. Maybe a little rain coming later, I think."

Or so Libby had said.

"Hopefully not too much rain," Gray said. "I hate rain. And the cold. I like for it to be sunny." He sighed like he was exhausted. "But I guess that's too much to hope for with winter coming."

"Lucky we're not in Toronto," Charlie said. "The winters there are much worse than here. But it is beautiful when it snows."

"We live in Northern California," Gray told her. "A town called Echo Bay. It rains so much there, especially in the winter. And even in the summer it's not like it's really warm and nice at the beach. It's a ripoff. But it's home. For now, at least."

"That does sound like a cheat. Everyone knows California is supposed to be warm and sunny all the time," Charlie said cheerfully. "All barely clothed surfers and sun-bathers. Oh and movie stars too, of course."

She knew it wasn't really, but that was the image people tended to have.
