Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

Allie was having the worst morning, which included waking up in jail in the wrong state, having terrible coffee, finding a Portalocity office and having zero luck at the Portalocity office, realizing she was dressed for December in what appeared to be summer, and just general quiet panic about getting back to New Ham.

So she wasn't even aware she was getting a big sib. Sorry!

Belle, on other hand, was aware that she would be getting a little sibling. She had her name tag on and was looking around for someone who might be her newly assigned sibling.

"Allie?" she called out eventually when a loop around the picnic hadn't proven productive. "Does anyone know an Allie?"

Allie looked around a little. There weren't that many people, but enough that there could be other Allies.

"I'm Allie," she said after a moment.

"Oh, good!" Belle offered a cheerful smile. "Hello! I'm Belle. The school asked me to be your Big Sibling, to help you get accustomed to this place."

Allie tilted her head. "I'm sorry, what?"

"I'm here to help you settle in," Belle said, trying to rephrase. "To the school. All new students get someone assigned to them. Mine left not long after I started or I would introduce you."

Whew. Okay.

"I'm not supposed to be here," Allie said. "I was in Connecticut yesterday and woke up in the jail this morning. You have to have a different Allie."

"I'm sorry did you say you woke up in the jail?" That was different! And maybe a little exciting.

"It's been a weird-ass day, yeah," Allie said. "And the cop wants me to find some little boy in socks."

"Five?" Belle asked. Of course it was. Of course. "Why did he want you to find him? He's hardly the helpful sort."

Unless it suited him. It suited him rather often when it came to Belle. Imagine that.

"Are you quite after all that?"

"I don't know," Allie said with a sigh, which could answer either question. "I'm focused on getting back home."

Or maybe to the other version of home that maybe existed. That would actually be more helpful.

"Not everyone intends to come here," Belle said, not without sympathy. "I did but plenty of others seem to arrive without meaning to. Perhaps I can help while you're here, at least? Explain things, or show you around. I could even, if you like, introduce you to Five."

If she had to.

"I guess?" Allie said. "I would really like to know more about people not meaning to end up here."

"It's an odd place," Belle said in a rather epic understatement.

"People are here from all over. Other worlds, even. I am."

"Where are you from?" Allie asked, a tad warily.

"The kingdom of Misthaven. It's in another realm entirely. It gets easier to accept with time, I promise."

Belle was going to skip the part about traveling here by magic bean. It seemed best.

"You're from a kingdom," Allie repeated. "In a realm. Yeah, that does take getting used to."

"The technology here is marvelous," Belle said. "Where are you from then?"

"Connecticut. Which is..." She gestured vaguely, weakly I dictating north. "That way."

"Oh, that's not far at all. Relatively."

Belle, unlike some people, paid at least some attention to geography.

"But you just woke up here? You weren't planning on going anywhere at all?"

"I was very much not going anywhere." She wasn't allowed. "So this is interesting."

"I don't think just waking up here happens all that often. Will you be alright? What can I help with?"

"Know anything about portals?" Allie asked.

"I've traveled through them," Belle said. "To get here from home and to take trips from here. "

"Do you know what to do if they say they can't access where you're trying to go?"

It'd been a bad day.
