Cupcakes, Friday 8/12. 2nd period

“Hopefully no live animals in the box this week,” Stark said, eyeing the box of ingredients warily once everyone had arrived in the classroom. “It doesn’t seem to be moving, at least.” He tapped the box with one finger, hesitantly, then gave a small, satisfied nod when no noises came from within.

“Only two classes left, counting today, so today we’ll be working with brown ingredients. Maybe even the brown things I meant for us to have today.” Stark lived in hope, somehow.

“Oh, good, this is meant to be here,” he said, pulling out some salted caramel. “Caramel is a good choice. Potatoes...are not so good. But not terrible. That may be fine? I don’t know. Oh. Maple syrup. That’s fine. Very sweet. And there’s cinnamon and I like that too. Maybe you could mix them?”

Maybe the potatoes were an aberration and this basket would be fine! Or… “Why are there mushrooms? Those don’t go in dessert,” Stark said with a sigh and a despairing look at Summer ~~assuming she was there~~. “Neither do these mushrooms!. Please don’t use mushrooms.” Summer.

“What else is here…” Stark frowned at the box before peering back in to it. “Peanut butter! Much better. And chocolate. This is good. Much better. And Nutella is good as well. But then I always like chocolate.” Try to contain your collective shock, students.

“And we have cashews. I suppose that’s find, and almonds which are also fine. Pretzels could be fine, too. I think. And I have something called cookie butter? That sounds promising at least. But the pine nuts seem less promising. And…chickpeas?”

Stark sighed and shook his head before tipping the box over and giving it a good shake in case anything else was in there. “That seems to be everything. I think. I hope.”

He was going to judge you if you used those mushrooms. He might be willing to allow the potatoes. Maybe.

He's going to judge you if you use the mushrooms.

He's really going to judge you if you smuggled in some tongues from Summer's class.

Kurt was going to try two different recipes today. One was a simple and safe chocolate and cinnamon cupcake with cookie butter icing. The second was a bit more adventurous and likely to go wrong. But he still wanted to see if he could take the potato pancake recipe he knew from his childhood and tweak it so it would work as a cupcake. Time would tell on that one.

"Let me know if the potato works," Stark said. He was curious.

"Aye!" Kurt said with a grin. "I think... it will be a lot denser and not a fluffy... but it should taste fine." Kurt looked from Stark to the potatoey mix and gave a laugh. "Hopefully!"

Stark. Stark. You should know by now that a phrase like please don't use mushrooms is basically the same as saying Summer, (who was meeting that despairing look with one of complete and utter innocence, truly), definitely use mushrooms by now!

So, yes, Summer was definitely using mushrooms for this one. She might even try this one herself, actually! And then get a whole bunch of ideas on adapting this with....you know....other mushrooms one of these days to see how that worked out for her....

If Stark didn't hold on to the faintest of hopes sometimes he would be overwhelmed by despair!

"Of course you did," he said with a little sigh and a fondly exasperated look when he saw the mushrooms.

That oh-so-innocent look was only amplified by the addition of a few sweet fluttering eyelashes.

"Well, I certainly wouldn't want them to go to waste, Stark."

Stark was not buying the innocent look.

"The gremlins eat the extra food, I think." Maybe that was why they left him alone? "Or the squirrels." Hopefully it wasn't the raccoons...

"Are you going to eat them?"

"Honestly?" said Summer, sounding a little surprised herself by her answer as she worked on mixing some of her ingredients. "These ones? I think I just might. I'm actually kind of curious? Plus, if this turns out okay, I think I might be able to..."

Hmmm, how best to put this?

"Expand on the concept. I have....ideas."

And if she wound up framing it in a way that resulted in Stark feeling just a tad bit...nervous, then O H W E L L.

"Expand on it how?" Stark asked with a very appropriate level of suspicion.

"What sort of ideas?"

And what happened if you gave an unstable sort of alien mushrooms? Probably nothing good.

And that's why she needed to properly experiment first!

"Terrible ones," Summer assured Stark, knowing he couldn't possibly argue with that detail. "Maybe. Or possibly amazing ones. Who knows? We'll just have to wait and find out, I guess."

"They usually are," Stark said agreeably. And yet all suspiciously.

"Try not to poison anyone?"

Amaya was definitely going to blame any lingering effects of having been a rabbit for her disappointment that the color of the ingredients this week wasn't orange. She could really go for some carrot cake right now.

Which had her more than a little curious about seeing what to do with that whole potato angle, honestly, especially since, well, potatoes were definitely common enough that she could pull that off nicely back in Daventry, which had...honestly been on her mind a little more in the last month or so....all things...considered...

So potato cupcakes for Amaya this week, it seemed, and if she managed to muddle through those, that Nutella was sort of calling her name right now, too.

"I'm trying a take on potato pancakes for one of mine too!" Kurt said with a grin when he saw Amaya with the potatoes as well.

"Great minds, I guess," Amaya noted, with a small nod and a smile back at Kurt. "I just figured a potato cupcake seemed a hood thing to have it one's pocket, really. Seems you can always scrounge up at least a potato."

For some mysterious reason (truly it was unfathomable) Vi was in a much better mood this week as she poked through the ingredients to try and figure out what looked good.

"We so need the Nutella," said Steph, who was the exact opposite of as far across the room as possible from her this week, which was to say pretty much glued to her side.

Well, there's no way that had anything to do with her good mood.

"Do we now?" Vi leaned on against Steph as she dutifully reached for the Nutella.

Naaaaaaaaaah. It was a total coincidence.

"Hell yes." Steph grabbed the maple syrup and looked at it, absentmindedly sliding her arm around Vi. "Unless you're allergic to nuts. You're not allergic, are you?"

Vi had probably seen an exceptionally cute puppy on the way to class or something.

"Not as far as I know," Vi replied, briefly resting her chin on Steph's shoulder.

"I feel like you probably would have noticed by now if you did," Steph said, turning to give her a lazy, goofy grin.

She scooped up a little bit of it, dabbed it onto her finger, then tried to smear it across the tip of Vi's nose.

Seriously, Steph, in front of everyone's ~~salad~~ cupcakes?

Vi rubbed it off her nose then licked her thumb clean. "Is that how we're playing it," she asked, looking over the ingredients again with a calculating eye.

Vi, no, you weren't helping.

Listen. That was a perfectly innocent thing to do, thank you.

"I just wanted to make sure you knew what they tasted like before we tried to use them in the cupcakes," Steph said, giving her a (she thought) disarmingly sweet smile.

Vi definitely appreciated Steph's smile, but she wasn't taken in by it.

"I didn't realise you tasted things with your nose, she said opening a jar of cookie butter.

"That part was just to be a pain," said a thoroughly unrepentant Steph.

"Figured as much."

Steph wasn't surprised to find Vi trying to rub cookie butter all over her face, right?

Not at all.

"If you make a mess," Steph said, grabbing at her wrist with no real effort to restrain her, "you're cleaning it up."

Because that sounded like such a threat, right.

Wow. So threat, very intimidation.

Oh no, somehow cookie butter ended up smushed into Steph's general mouth area. "Oops."

After he considered the ingredients Guillermo decided to try making his cupcakes with pretzels, peanut butter and chocolate, he was actually quite happy with how his turned out.

Nell made some Nutella and cashew cupcakes and then tried a batch using cookie butter. Not bad!

Some of those ingredients Travis could see making flour out of, for those with food sensitivities.

He had no idea what someone would do with the mushrooms, though. He was afraid to ask.

"At least there isn't any seafood today? Or anything still living."

Small favors and all that.

"Definitely glad about that. You looked about ready to explode over those last week."

"They were still alive!" And they were seafood. There had been so many things wrong there. So many.

"This week is much better," Stark said, offering a smile. "Are you ready for tonight?" Because Stark was not ready to bowl or double date but he was going to do his best!

"I think so. I don't know either of the other guys very well," or at all, "but you'll be there, so I know I'll enjoy at least some of the company."

That got another smile from Stark.

"I've only met Watts once. But Steven is very friendly."

He's happy to have a chat.

I did not sleep enough (when even was the last time I slept enough, really?) and I have so much stuff that needs doing today!
