Lana waved at the students as they came in. "We're in the back half of the code now." She pointed at the board, which read, Through power, I gain victory.

"So, does power grant, or help you gain, victory? Is it a sure thing? What sorts of victory are there, and how might power help in the pursuit of each? Are they something to be pursued in the first place? Military victory is the obvious one, but I'm interested in the others as well."

"I would say the proper application of power leads to victory," Illyana mused. "I know a lot of people with raw power, who have fallen before a foe that was more ruthless or devious."

"I felled my previous master by literally stabbing him in the back," she continued bluntly. "I did it to save someone else, but if I hadn't done it, I wouldn't be here today."

"I wasn't capable of taking him on, face-to-face." Not emotionally, at least, though perhaps she had already been the better sorcerer. "But I used my magic -- my power -- and crafted a weapon that was specifically deadly to magic users, and put it through his heart."

"I took control of his realm, and saved someone I cared about. Through power, I gained victory."

"That's a very good point," Lana said. "All the power in the galaxy is nothing if you don't know how to use it. And congratulations," she added with a smile.

"My victory put me in charge of a magical hell realm, so, yay for power, boo for trying to find constructive, non-evil things for my not-so-bright and mildly-wicked subjects," Illyana joked. "Luckily their favorite thing is to make me happy, but in this case, power brought victory, which brought more power, and responsibility."

"Responsibility unfortunately isn't addressed in the code, at least not directly," Lana said. "Though I feel it's an important part of wielding power."

"The idea of this line cannot be dealt with individually," Anakin said. "The code builds upon itself. The only way you are allegedly receiving this power was by strength through passion and the rejection of peace. And I refuse that kind of power."

"We'll deal with the code as a whole later," Lana said. "Right now, I'm more interested in picking it apart, each line in isolation. If you take just this line - assume the power came in a way that you'd approve of - would it and should it lead to victory?"
