The Gladiators would come into the Danger Shop that day to find a large foam pyramid at the center of the arena, so if anyone was wondering what they might be doing for this week's challenge, Rosa might let you skip wearing the helmet this week because there was clearly nothing up there that needed to be protected.

"Alright, Gladiators," she nodded once they all seemed settled and geared up, "this is the Pyramid. The goal is simple: get to the top. But, of course, it won't be that simple. Sniper. Crocker ~~or whatever name he picked~~ ~~assuming they were there~~. Based on your performances last week in Human Cannonball, you have been selected to defend the top of the pyramid. Do whatever it takes to make sure the other gladiators don't reach the top. We'll be doing rounds of two; the first one to the top gets the chance to compete again for ultimate champion, which...might give you an advantage next week.

"Any questions? If not, Sniper, Crocker, head on up and get ready to defend the territory; the rest of you, get limber, get stretched, and get ready."

Steve smirked. "Maybe he likes getting tackled."

Duke snorted. "Always knew he had it in him."

Steve grinned. "I'll pass that along."

"You should. And tell him I said 'hi'. Haven't seen that guy in forever."

"We should have a beach cookout soon," Steve decided. "Get everyone together."

"You know, that sounds like fun. We haven't had enough beach parties this summer."

That he knew of. He'd been kind of . . . incommunicado for a bit .

"Get a bunch of crabs and go full Maryland?" Steve suggested. Then he frowned. "Will that piss of the crab at the clinic?"

The things you had to worry about around here...

"There's a crab at the clinic?" Duke asked. ". . . Does it work there?"

"Kind of? I think?" Steve said. "The radio has been weird about it."

This was just reaffirming Duke's determination to avoid ending up in the clinic at basically any cost.

"I mean. It's gossip reported by squirrels, read by people they sometimes have to pressgang into it. I don't really assume it's reporting anything fully accurately."

"Definitely a good way to get through life," Steve agreed. "If I told people back home we got our news from drunk squirrels, they'd have me committed."

"I'd say the same, but Haven is its own kind of nuts. They'd probably wonder why I was calling the brothers who run the local paper 'squirrels'."

No one would bother questioning the drunk part, though.

"Tell 'em it's new slang," Steve said.

“That I might get locked up for,” Duke joked. “Mainers aren’t into change, as a rule.”

Steve laughed. "Hawaiians can get a little mired in tradition, too."

“I blame the tourists. When you get overrun by out of toners all the time you get a little . . . insular.”

Steve nodded. "That makes sense. My family's been in Honolulu for three generations and that still makes us newcomers."

“Yep, sounds about right.” Duke smirked. “Guessing the fact that you’re a white boy doesn’t help, either, huh?”

"Oh, definitely," Steve said, smiling. "I'm kamaʻāina--local--but not kanaka, which is native. Danno's a haole, which is pretty much white guy."

Duke nodded. “Yep, that’s what they called me when I passed through, too.” He shrugged. “I’ve been called worse.”

"It depends a lot on tone," Steve said with a tiny smile. "I've heard it from probably 80 percent of the perps we've arrested."
