The games were set up in the park today, which was a good thing, and there weren't even piles of ugly t-shirts today: another good thing!

There were very ugly socks instead.

And baby pools filled with...well, let's just call it water and not ruin the surprises. People who had been around for previous summers probably already remembered what happened with socks.

"Today you will be working in small groups to keep these pools up over your heads as you lie on the ground," Anakin explained. "Once you are settled in place with the pools, you must then go in a circle and each remove one sock from your feet without dumping the pool contents onto yourselves. And then go around again."

That was a rather mean smile, Anakin. "No powers. Listen for your names."

"That's completely different." Somehow.

"My ass it is," Steph retorted mildly. "We both kind of suck at taking care of ourselves in different ways, and we're just not letting each other get away with it any more."

Vi sighed fondly. and went to rest her chin on Steph's shoulder. "Yes, boss."

You know what, that actually kind of made it a little weird.

Steph laughed and reached up to ruffle her hair. "It's really way more of a best-friend-who-cares-about-you thing than it is a boss thing, you know."

"Yeah, I know," Vi said, unconsciously pressing her head up into Steph's hand. "I care about you too."

So maybe Steph was silent for a few seconds because she was just enjoying the sound of that statement and grinning like a goof. What of it?

"I maybe kind of guessed that a little bit. Shocker, I know."

"And I thought I was being subtle." With the plastering herself all over her and everything.

You know, like friends often did.

Oh, so like now? There was nothing wrong with a little (a lot of) totally platonic PDA, anyway.

"Oh, yeah. Super subtle, dude." Steph gave her hair one more affectionate ruffle and then leaned her own head against Vi's. "It took me forever to decode what all the hugging and shit really meant."

Super platonic, no matter what the squirrels thought.

"Well, I didn't want to confuse you," Vi said. "Give you the idea I couldn't stand you or something."

The narrative's repeated emphasis of that was in no way sarcastic. Really.

"Good thing we're both clear on that, then," Steph teased her. "Especially since it looks like we have to actually work together today."
