Completely Safe Science With Beaker!, Friday, June 3, 2022
"Meep meep meep meep meep!" Beaker said, gesturing grandly to the dishwashing soap, hydrogen peroxide, and yeast on his bench.
Did anyone recognize the components of elephant toothpaste?
Beaker, still meeping authoritatively, went through the steps for making elephant toothpaste as he mixed the soap with the hydrogen peroxide, then carefully (...well, for Beaker) added the yeast.
And a huge plume of foam engulfed him.
"MEEP!"
At least he didn't catch fire this time?

Watch the lecture
Re: Watch the lecture
Yeah, yeah, "there are safeties in here", whatever. He was prepared.
Re: Watch the lecture
"Gotta admit," she said, "have to admire that level of appreciation for proper safety gear."
Was it bad, though, that her next thought involved thinking it would be a shame if he went through all that trouble for nothing?
Re: Watch the lecture
"It's my job," Travis said, glancing over at her. Was she being sarcastic? It was hard for him to tell. "And, you know. I've met this guy before."
Re: Watch the lecture
And also, she, too, had met the guy.
"Good call," she said. "Now I feel comparatively unprepared."
Re: Watch the lecture
Travis gave her a little smile. "I'll bring a spare extinguisher for you next week."
Re: Watch the lecture
"You know," she realized, "I should probably get one of those for myself one of these days..."
Sure, she had some buckets, and she'd made a variety of her own extinguishers over the years, but they were definitely of a particular Rube Goldberg-esque variety.
Re: Watch the lecture
"You --" Travis cut the question off at the quick. There was no point on this island questioning why anyone wouldn't already have a fire extinguisher available somewhere. "Yes. Yes you should. And fire alarms, if you don't already have those. They'll alert the station right away so we can come help put anything out."
Re: Watch the lecture
There was a paaaaause.
"Hopefully not anything," said Amaya. "I kind of need some of that to do my job."
Re: Watch the lecture
He did not, actually. But surely there were systems in place specifically for blacksmiths, right?
Not that Travis realized that was what she did for a living.
"Well, as long as your place is up to code, then you're probably alright. You want to make sure you're set up to alert us if there's anything big enough to pose a significant threat to people or property."
Re: Watch the lecture
Re: Watch the lecture
"Excellent." Travis was way too relieved to hear that. "So what sort of work do you do, anyway?"
Re: Watch the lecture
"Oh," she said, as if realizing he wasn't joking, "well. I'm the blacksmith."
Re: Watch the lecture
"Ohhhh. Yeah, yeah, fire's kind of a prerequisite for that, isn't it."
He really needed to get out more.
Re: Watch the lecture
"Just a bit" Amaya snorted faintly with a small grin, "yeah.
"But," she added, because she really couldn't leave any sales pitch unturned, "if you find yourself needing any fine metal work, custom made or standard weapons, or the occasional contraption, you should swing on by!"
Re: Watch the lecture
"I will . . . absolutely do that," Travis said with a chuckle. "Can't say it's something I've needed before, but around here you never know, right?"
Re: Watch the lecture
She paused a little on that.
"Well, maybe I might have to pick some of that back up again, too," she added, because someone was still completely unaware that the island's resident woodworker had indeed come back after all.
Re: Watch the lecture
Travis nodded, and was about to tell her he didn't think he needed anything like that, then paused.
". . . You ever make a pike pole?"
Re: Watch the lecture
"Oh, I love a good pike!" Amaya said, eyes brightening, and absolutely thinking of a completely different pike, but it was fine, she'd be able to manage that other one just fine. "Got a few on the wall right now, actually! Don't get a lot of requests for them around here, but the Daventry Guard? Back where I was before here? Very big on their poleaerms, but, then again, they always have had a pretty long reach."
Amaya, no.
Re: Watch the lecture
"Right. Um." Travis was thinking maybe there was a miscommunication happening here. "Well, firefighters use them when we need to break holes in roofs and things, to vent a fire. I've got a few, but if I had a handmade one? Envy of all the other firefighters."
Well. Of Vic, anyway. Who would then call him a nerd, but that was fine.
Re: Watch the lecture
"Handmade and custom," she threw out, because that was important, too. "I'm real good at the fancy detailing work if you wanted to make it as pretty as it is useful. Maybe I'll have to swing by sometime and have a look at what you got, and we can workshop from there."
Re: Watch the lecture
"Sure! And maybe I can hook you up with some fire safety stuff, even beyond what's required by code. Can never be too careful, right?"

He'd met beaker.
