Ancient Food Crimes; Friday, First Period [06/03].
"Morning, everyone," Summer said, with a faint grin and a nod of her head as she leaned against the station at the front of the class, idly tossing a banana between her hands or just up in the air a little while she waited for everyone to get settled. And once everyone did, she tossed the banana just a little bit higher, caught it, and held it up.
"Today, I want to talk about this guy," she explained. "The banana. One of the most popular fruits in the entire world, known for its versatility, its potassium, and its tendency to collect in a withered brown frozen state in the back of many a freezer, because you were definitely going to make banana bread out of that, really, don't throw it away, you'll get to it tomorrow!
"For the most part, there are few people who find a banana objectionable. Exceptions doubtless exist, but it's a pretty run-of-the-mill, average-joe kind of fruit. Good on its own, or you can slice it up into cereal. It's great in baked goods, yogurt, plays well with other fruits. An all-around good guy, as far as fruits go. Which makes some of the things people have done to this tried and true fruit all the more horrible when you get right down to it. The banana did nothing to deserve this.
"Well," she amended, "you could go into the long and storied history of colonial exploitation, slave labor, unsafe farming conditions, or the absurd amount of genetic mutations, pesticides, and other chemicals that go into the crop, but that's not the bananas' fault.
"And I don't know who exactly to blame for what we're about to witness here today, but that's what we're here to maybe find out. Bear in mind, once upon a time, I actually did a whole workshop like this focused specifically on bananas, so this is just the worst of the worst here, but that's an astonishingly amount of terrible banana-related food crimes out there.
"Today, we're going to talk about four specific ones, though: the classic Ham and Banana Hollandaise, the lesser-known and shockingly lazy banana and shrimp salad and its friend the banana sardine boat, and, of course, the banana candle salad, which is less offensive from a flavor perspective and entirely about the aesthetics of it all."
If you didn't see what she meant immediately, then it was going to be very awkward explaining it to you.

"Ohhhhhh."
There was a lot of that reaction for her today, apparently, and when she saw that it looked like the crying might start anew, she flailed a little bit internally and wanted to kick herself a little...after she removed her foot from her mouth, apparently!
"Oh, wow, Liz, that's....I mean, it could still happen, though, right? After we finally get the portals going again, or maybe they'll win that war, and everything is, like, you know, totally happily ever after, and everything?"
It might have been a little more convincing if she really believed that could happen, and, oh god, what if they really were cut off from Eos for good?
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
“What if I don’t see him again or hear from him again? What if…” the what ifs were running through her head now as all that self doubt crept up again, “what if …” she couldn’t get her biggest fear out, “what if he finds someone else…” it came out in barely more than a whisper and the tears did start falling again.
Sorry Summer.
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
"Then he's a fucking idiot," she said, "that's what. But, hey, it's only been a couple of weeks, right? In the grand scheme of space and time, that's, like, nothing. Maybe we just have to be patient, you know, and hope for the best. I'm sure he's trying his best to get back to you, Liz, and you know what? Even if he is dragging his ass, he's got Gladio and Ignis with him, too, and you know they're not going to let him slack off. Especially since I'm pretty sure Ignis is going to want to get back here for Goose, too. And where else is Gladio going to get discounts on drinks just because he's allergic to shirts?"
A pause, for effect.
"Okay, maybe that last one is probably a lot of places, because have you seen that guy?"
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
Finally she managed to calm down again, taking in what Summer was saying and then at the description of Gladio she did manage to laugh.
“I just…wish I could be doing more to help them,” Liz said as she leaned against Summer, feeling comforted by that hug, she felt like she had been saying this a lot lately, “I just worry so much about him,”

Then another thought struck her, “If I’m like this two weeks without seeing him, what am I going to be like if it is longer?” she said softly, “I’m already a complete mess as it is,”
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
"It does get easier," she said.
She didn't say that, eventually, the numbness just sort of took over.
"It's like getting up that first hill," she continued, "or like climbing up that first drop in a roller coaster. It's slow and tedious and nerve-wracking because all you can think about is that drop waiting for you at the top, but once you get there, you realize it wasn't even nearly as bad as you thought it was going to be..
"And who knows? Maybe it'll be over before it manages to get worse, anyway."
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
“I …I hope so,” she said quietly, “I …I don’t want Prompto to think I’m weak because I was completely useless while he was gone, I …don’t want him to think less of me because I fell apart like this,”
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
"Well," she pointed out, "it's not like he's here to even see it."
And now to find out if that particular brand of coping humor would only just make Liz cry more.
But, hey! All that crying should wear her out enough to finally get some sleep maybe!
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
“I guess that’s true,” Liz finally said, even though she still felt guilty about all of this, “I still can’t help but feel he’d be disappointed, especially after he did so much to help me when I wasn’t sleeping well at the start of the year,”
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
Yeah, hearing that laugh, brief and short as it was, was a good thing.
"Yeah, well," she said, pullling that thread just a little more, "and he's the reason you're not sleeping well now, so it evens out. You don't owe him shit. But speaking of sleeping...we should get you home, you should get some rest."
Re: Eat Food and Discuss! - Ancient Food Crimes, 06/03.
"Okay," she said quietly, "I'll try and do that, I mean get some rest I mean ..." she paused, "and thank you," she said softly, "for putting up with me when I'm like this ... I'm ...just well ... everything's so confusing right now, my mood swings are not normally this bad," she sighed.
