ADVANCED THEORY: Origins

You should all have partners by now. One person from each pair/triplet will need to come to my desk and write your name and the name of your partner(s) on this paper. As you do so, you will be assigned an ancient society of this dimension to research and present at least three important impacts they had on mathematics today. This will be due next week, and graded. You get the entire day to research.

Sir Nadir Khan

Evelyn goes to his desk and signs the paper.

*feels overwhelmed*

Uh sir, have partners been assigned already? I'm not sure I have one.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll partner with you, if you want? Then we can be overwhelmed together, at least . . .

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[OOC: Er, see comment below that seems to have attached itself to the wrong place . . . *sigh*]

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*is relieved*

That sounds great. I understand the concept alright, it's out of school (http://www.livejournal.com/users/lauraholt/2152.html) problems that makes everything three times as big.

*sigh*

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[OOC: It really does. But we manange, yeah?]

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems everybody's having that sort of week. Now, do you want to go up and give Professor Kahn our names or shall I?

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Life wasn't nearly as hectic back in Los Angeles.

I'll do it...keeping busy is a good distraction.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[OOC: Too true Also: ye gods, Laura's busy. I mean, Thomasina has a good few classes, but not nearly as many activities and activities seem to be where things really happen . . . well, and in the dorms. And in town. And in study hall. Just like high school. 8) ]

[identity profile] river-dancing.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there any chance there might be room for a third in your group? I've been so busy the last several days, I hadn't even known about the group signups.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nor at Sidley Park. Still, you're absolutely right about keeping busy - this new project will be good for that . . . I wonder what topic we'll get?

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why not - Laura, would you mind if - ah, I don't believe I know your name . . . ?

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No I don't mind at all!

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It certainly seems like it, plus add homework from other classes and I've got enough to keep me distracted for the entire weekend.

[identity profile] river-dancing.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"River. Hello," the dark-haired girl says. She extends her hand.

[identity profile] river-dancing.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, good," River sighs, relievedly. "I didn't want to start the class off on a bad foot."

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*goes to sign paper*

[livejournal.com profile] miss_thomasina, [livejournal.com profile] river_dancing, [livejournal.com profile] lauraholt.

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, I know what that's like.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thomasina takes River's hand in a light but firm clasp, then lets go after an appropriate length of time. Manners she does have, even if she understands little else about this strange place she's ended up.

River, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm called Thomasina.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[OOC: I spend at least 6, usually, though I read a lot of stuff I'm not involved in 'cos OMG teh crack! But I've signed up four characters now and need to actually get them involved in plot . . . and you're allowed the obsessed(though I've never seen any of the show, so I can't be gratifyingly fangirlish with you). I mean, really, we all are around here. Speaking of, y'know what I want? 8)]

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That's certainly what I spent last Saturday working on - this class and Secondary Maths and Geology and Classics, as well as reading some of the work of the author's the professor mentioned in English. And now I've signed up for Greek and Roman Archaology, as well. And drawing, if the professor ever shows up for class.

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This time last week I had half the amount of classes - Secondary Math, Origin, Lifestyle and Intro to Business. Since then I've joined up for Music/Band Practice, Criminology and Criminal Justice. Plus the school newspaper (and Junior Achievers which I'm now regretting), so if ever I needed an excuse to stay busy (or away from my mother), I've got one.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[OOC: What I want is for Fraser and RayK from Due South to show up and join the town police force. Well, with good writers behind them, that is. I'm not going to do it myself, though, as I've already got students, staff and townies covered and I'm not sure enough of their voices. But I totally get the fandom geek thing. I mean, I'm playing out of small/obscure fandoms for all of mine(including what's probably the first thing I was ever a fan of - back in the '80s. when I was tiny), but I have such love for all the people who do these really awesome jobs of reimagining their characters as teenagers shoved together in this really odd school and just nailing their voices. Whoever it is that's playing Archie Kennedy is great - I really need to fangirl the letter they've had him write to Horatio. And there're so many others. So, who're you going to sign up next . . . oi, that was long.]

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only joined the science club so far - I thought there was going to be a dancing club and I was so looking forward to learning to waltz! But there hasn't been any further mention of it . . .

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was never that great at science...no where near my math level at least. Dancing club...intriguing. If they ever opened a detective/private eye club...I'd so be vying for president!

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A detective . . . detects things? Finds things out? Like a Bow Street Runner? Women are allowed to do that?

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh uhh *thinks of another word* investigates into matters. Looks into things. Sort of like a police officer, only privatised.

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[OOC: Wouldn't it be awesome? I've only seen a bit of the show myself(and none when it was originally on), but I'm planning to buy the DVDs now that they've come out in cheaper, better-packaged versions and I've read a supremely massive amount of fic for it(am actually doing that in the background right now - ds_flashfiction). And you're mostly right about obscure fandoms, except for ones that appeal to 13 y.o. girls, like Bend It Like Beckham, which I would really love to see more fic for, but not of the awful, stupid, angsty fem-slash or goopy/angsty romance-novel sort that seems to be the norm *sigh* As for the whole Who's the Boss? thing, well, I have to admit to rather liking it when I was in . . . middle school? something like that, so I understand the Angela love. As for the sickness and/or wrongness of your x-over pairing? Meh. Whatever. It's fanfic. You can take it anywhere you want. And there's good porn to be had for 'The Nanny'? Now, that sounds promising . . . (and we just keep getting longer and longer winded)]

[identity profile] miss-thomasina.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Investigates things. Like a magistrate! Oh. What a different time this is!

[identity profile] lauraholt.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of. An investigator does the work, the magistrate prosecutes. But you've got the right idea.

[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*comes over and signs the paper*

Broots and Sawyer.

((I have no clue what his lj is...))

[OOC:I mostly read in book and tv show fandoms, but I do have a couple movies - BILB, PotC, Breakfast Club, Hard Core Logo(in X-overs), possibly something else I'm forgetting. Eh. I like any fandom that grips me, basically. And I was still in middle school when WtB? stopped airing, which is like half a lifetime away. Never even thought to look for fic about it(nor Caroline in the City, which might be amusing, considering that the show used pretty much every trick in the book to keep Caroline and Richard apart for like forever and it would be interesting to see what fans could come up with beyond that) as, umm, it went off the air at a point I hadn't started thinking about fictional characters like that and I didn't imprint on it the way I did on, say, The Dark Is Rising books or The Babysitters Club series. Anyway, I know all about having a ton of fic sitting around waiting for me to finish it - I write mainly in HP(yeah, another one), but my current baby is an HP/Smallville x-over, which I'm actually pretty proud of and may actually finish. Also, Sam/Jon? I'd totally read that, but then I'm helping beta one of my friends' Smallville fic in which Clark and Lex grow up as brothers and then get involved, so, y'know . . . I'm flexible. Oh, and it's totally your fault that I now have Fran Drescher saying "Mr. Shef-fieeeeeld" in my head. 8)]

Babylonians? If you say so sir.
