Guiding the Powerful Yet Incompetent, Monday, Fourth Period
If Yennefer appeared slightly less than her usual impeccably put-together self today, it might have something to do with the seven-year-old sitting in a corner of the classroom. Zdzislawa had somehow obtained a little child-sized lute, and was now attempting to compose a song upon it, the subject of which seemed to be how kittens were great and her parents should allow her to have one.
Yennefer had to admit she was quite talented for her age.
"The king continues to be embroiled in an ill-advised war," Yennefer reported to her students. "News of heavy losses among his armies have reached the castle, and some of the king's advisors have suggested we all just pretend he wasn't trying to conquer the entire country after all and everything has been going just as he planned, in order to spin this war as not a total failure. However, of course, this requires you to come up with an alternate, plausible plan to present to the public, and then you must convince the king. How will you proceed?"
"Kittens," Zdzislawa warbled. "Their little feet look like mittens..."
Yennefer's eyelid twitched. "Do not present your schemes in song."
