Creature Languages, 4/17, Period 4

There is candy and soda for the students, as well as herbal tea.

Dream waits for the students to assemble, then begins his lecture.

"Hello. Today we begin our study of the last animal language we will discuss this semester. It is one that may be perhaps closer to your own tongues than many of the others we have studied -- that of simians, especially monkeys."

Dream cues up a videotaped lecture in the DVD player. "This speaker makes the unfortunately common error of conflating monekys with apes, but it is still a reasonable discussion of the similarities and differences between the uses made of languages by simians, and those by man."

"I also have a handout containing a touch more information about monkeys, and a second handout about squirrel monkeys specifically, such as our own Mr. Nielson."

"Ask questions, should you have them."

Victor noticed that Walter was trying to work with Pippi, so he sat by himself until someone asked him if they wanted to practice. Then again, maybe it'd be better if he worked alone today. With Walter right there, he was afraid that he'd start crying if his opened his mouth.

Pippi exchanges a glance with Mr. Neilson and returns to reviewing her paper.

Mr. Neilson hops over to Victor's desk and doffs his hat.

"Hey, Mr Neilson," Victor rasped, his throat suddenly tight. He gave a weak smile.

Mr Neilson gives a smart little bow and hops up onto Victor's shoulder and appears to be glancing over the vocabulary sheet.

Or maybe he's just looking for a cashew.

Hard to tell.

Dream stopped to stand next to the moneky and sthe students. Ignoring Victor and Zero's conversation for the moment, he addresses Mr. Neilson. //Are you prepared to teach on Thursday? Again, I thank you for it.//

Mr. Neilson gives Dream a smart bow, doffing his hat.

//Yes,// he says in a posh sounding accent, //I believe I am. You are most welcome sir. I thank you for thinking to ask.//

//You have been an excellent guest student,// Dream said. //How have you liked the animal languages you have learned?//

//I have enjoyed them very much sir.// Mr. Neilson replied. //I am sure our red-headed female friend here will wreak much havoc and sadly I no longer have an excuse to stay out of it.// he added jokingly.

Dream looked from Mr. Neilson to Pippi, ghost of a smile on his face. //You seem to take care of each other.//

Mr. Neilson scratched under his little hat.

//We are both social creatures.// He said. //She, her sire, and his crew were my tribe for a very long time.//

Zero swore under her breath when she realized Pippi and Mr. Neilson had already been claimed. Then she leaned over and poked Victor with her pen. "Oi. Wanna practice?"

Zero looks kind of rough, with a bruise on one cheek and her left wrist all taped up. Stupid Mole Men.

After smiling at Mr. neilson, Victor turned to Zero and nodded. he really didn't look much better, at least emotionally.

"What happened?" he managed.

Mr. Neilson, sitting on Victor's shoulder (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/816494.html?thread=38085230#t38085230) looks equally aghast at Zero's condition.

"Eh. Mole People. You look like death warmed over, is something wrong?"

It occurs to Zero she should have asked that in Monkey.

English was about to make his eyes water. Maybe monkey would help.

//My love hates me. I'm not worth being with anymore.//

He tried to say it quietly, and if anyone overheard him, it was by pure accident. Really.

Lacking any hair to groom. Mr. Neilson pat Victor on the head.

After a moment of looking the sheet over, Victor added:

//Maybe I'm wrong. My friends say he loves me, but he doesn't act like it.//

Zero blinked.

//That sounds a little// "drastic" //to me.//

//I know! It came out of nowhere!//

He had to be careful to keep his (literal) screeching down.

//No, the 'not worth being with' bit. So you got--// that can't be right. //left. It's not the end of the world.//

"It feels like it," he mumbled. Then, he shook his head and sighed. But enough about that."

//What is your favorite fruit?//

"You get past that," Zero assured him. "World keeps turning. Plenty of other fish in the sea--well, not this sea, because our sex ratio is whacked, but...across the causeway!"

//I enjoy tomatoes.//

Victor was going to say something else about his feelings, but decided not to. There were other things to focus on right now.

"I did't know tomatoes were a fruit." //I like apples.//

"Mm-hmm. Also, members of the nightshade family." //Apples are delicious and crunchy.//

//Yes, I love to throw them.//

Victor raised an eyebrow at his sheet. "I mean,"

//I liek to eat them.//

"I guess they're almost the same," he concluded.

//What is your favorite color?//
