Library, Thursday 12/9

There were burning logs in fireplaces showing on every computer screen in the library when Belle arrived. No online public access catalogs here today. Only Yule logs.

Hopefully nobody needed to look anything up online or actually check out any books.

Belle was keeping herself busy eating candy canes and reading about holiday traditions and trying to make at least some sense of the recent odd events. She still didn't understand the sweaters from the party she'd inadvertently attended on Friday. She also didn't understand why one book was determined she read about mistletoe which she was fairly certain was poisonous.

"They do tend to have a mind of their own, don't they," Eliot said, thinking of the two volumes he'd helped reunite early in Quentin's first year.

"They seem to," Belle agreed, heading over to where she hoped the magic section was still located. "I do enjoy that some of them volunteer to be read while I'm here but it is a bit troublesome when the shelves rearrange themselves."

"Sounds like they need some discipline," Eliot said. "At least they're not trying to burn each other."

There was a fair number of missing books in the Brakebills library thanks to some overzealous reading material deciding to emulate their equally overzealous, bigoted authors.

Belle shot Eliot an alarmed look because what if the books were listening and got ideas?

"Is that a usual problem where you're from?"

"Not since the librarians wised up and put the aggressors in special storage," Eliot said. "I'm a Magician. Our books tend to develop . . . minds of their own."

"Extended exposure to magic made them magical?" That was interesting.

"I wonder if that happens other places as well."

"That or being written about magic by Magicians," Eliot said, shrugging. "I'm not a Librarian. Or even a librarian. I'm actually happy to avoid libraries entirely when I can help it."

"You couldn't help it today?" Belle asked.

"Yule logs," Eliot said, "don't tell you much about how to stop a fear entity."

"No, I can't imagine they would say anything at all on that subject." Belle frowned, looking around. "Or any other subject."

Yule logs were just not informative by nature.

"The books will certainly be more useful than the logs are," she added. "At least I hope so."
