There was a note on the door when the students arrived:

Had to travel up to my in-laws early this year. We have three more Thanksgiving dinners to attend this time, apparently. Please write an essay about the ethics of forcing your loved ones to spend time with people they actively loathe once a year under the umbrella of 'it's the holidays' and bring it next week.

Well. At least he'd left you Thanksgiving-flavored candy corn for your trouble? Though that stuff was probably also an ethical violation.

Jo looked at the candy doubtfully, she was a little wary of it since Halloween but then she thought it’d be rude to not at least try one since she was here.

She took one, took a bite and because spitting it back out would be rude, she forced herself to finish the mouthful she’d had.
