Badass Bitch Survival Guide: Multiverse Edition; Monday, Second Period [09/06].
The class would be meeting in the danger shop, which was set up like a classroom, because Summer would seriously never not find that absolutely hilarious, and it would be clear as the students filed in to take a seat that she was ready and eager to go.
"Okay!" she said. "Hey, guys! Welcome back. Sooooo, now that your first week is out of the way, it's time to start really devling into the nitty-gritty of all of this, and I figured a really helpful place to start would just be based on simple terminology and concepts. And, clearly, it's going to be more challenging to know how to be a Badass Bitch of the Multiverse if you don't even know what the Multiverse is. So? What is it?"
Here, Summer turned to write MULTIVERSE on the blackboard, in very big letters, with a line underneath it for emphasis.
"The Multiverse," she said, turning back to the students, "in a nutshell, is the collection of a multitude of universes that exist at any given time at the same time. The Multiverse is infinite, there is no finite number of how many different realities there are at any given time, which, you know, is kind of a wild concept if you really sit down and think about it. Fandom Island kind of has a pretty unique position in all of this, as a sort of NEXUS," she turned to write that on the board as she pronounced it with care, "for different dimensions converging into its own, seperate dimention."
And now she was drawing a circle on the board, with a lot of different arrows pointing to it, FH written in the center of the circle and Everybody Else written outside of it.
"Now, with a few exceptions, most of us are coming from different dimensions for each other, even if our versions of these realities aren't really all that different from others," she continued. "For example, maybe you're from Earth, and, honestly, almost everything about your Earth is the exact same as this Earth, except your Earth has no Fandom Island, and Fandom's Earth has no you, except the current you, because that would be a big fat temporal anomoly, or whatever. Not that it's not possible to exist in a dimension where there's another version of you--I've been in the same room with other versions of myself a few times, but that is a topic for another class--it just tends to be rare and can get super awkward, so it's kind of nice to know that this," she pointed down, "reality seems to exist on a plane where we're conveniently free of infringing on this reality's version of ourself. This dimension....and I'm sure there are exceptions, of course....probably has no us, so we are the only us existent in this dimension, most of the time. Right?
"And another thing to keep in mind when dealing with finite universes, especially in frequent contact with each other like here in Fandom, is that some of the differences will be big, some of them will be slight. For example, whole planets might exist in your universe that don't exist in mine. Earth might not even exist in some dimensions. In someone's universe, the moon might be more than just a giant barren rock floating around our planet, or people can use magic but only if they're blood-type AB. Like, another example, when I first started here, I had a friend; we were both from Earth that had been invaded by aliens, but my Earth was invaded by different aliens than her Earth, so while they were both Earth alien invasion, both of our experiences were entirely different. You might get a situation here in Fandom where someone is from your long distant past, and that means that a version of you might exist in the future of their world, but it wouldn't really be you because you exist in your own version of your world, and they probably existed in your past, but they weren't really the same them. Sometimes, we get people from the same place, but different timelines, and that's another version of a different universe, and sometimes the universe consolidates to form a third version of the universe where you all share it, which is rare, but that happened with a few friends of mine because they really screwed up their timeline, and I think the Multiverse was all, 'you guys really made this too complicated, I'mma just gonna throw you all in this dimension together and call it good.'
"Aaaaaanyway," Summer took a breath, "needless to say, this can all get super complicated and convoluted, but it's also something we deal with on a daily basis here on Fandom Island, even if we're not always completely, consciously aware of it. And in order to be a Badass Bitch of the Multiverse, you have to sort of at least understand the Multiverse in the simpliest terms and generally not be thrown by it. Which sometimes just requires experience, but it also requires sort of an open mind and an acceptance of the fact that....honestly? The things that brought us here to this spot in this life is such a complete and total crapshoot. If even the smallest thing might have been even slightly different, we would exist in a universe completely seperate from this one. There are infinite realities out there where you don't exist at all; the fact that you exist in this one is just a convoluted series of events that could never be replicated exactly. In a way, when we make a decision about something, we're only adding to that stream of events, and creating two more realities: the one we're living, where we make the decision, and the one some other version of us will now exist in where we didn't. On and on and on, ad infinitim, y'know?
"I feel like, in Fandom, we get little glimpses into some of these alternate versions more so than other places," she added. "I feel like sometimes, this island likes to play a little brief game of What If? by throwing us twenty years in the future for a weekend, or making us all kids again for a few days. The Alternate Universe kids that sometimes show up is a real trip for that one, because not only are those kids potentially in our futures, some of them are very much not, and it gives you a weird sort of look into the trajectory of our realities, or different ones. I might even change the course of our current trajectory and change our actions now that we have this knowledge of a potential future. In those moments, the multiverse shifts again, creates another reality, maybe even a few other realities, branching off of those moments, variant from the current one but just slightly."
She let out another breath, this time with an apologetic smile for the lecture that she assumed was probably a little convoluted and twisted, but if it wasn't making you scratch your head a little, then either you weren't thinking about it hard enough or she really was doing a crap job of explaining.
"So anyway," she concluded, "today, we're actually in a simulation of a Fandom Island that is slightly different from the way the island usually is on most days. For example," she moved over to one of the windows, which had the shades drawn, and pulled the shades back to reveal a vista not of an island in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Maryland, but instead a mountain setting, whisps of clouds curling around them, "this Fandom is in the mountains! Almost everything else about how the town is set up is the same, only we're in the mountains instead! How does this affect everything else? Does it affect anything else? WHo knows? Well....you will. Your assignment today is to go out there, try to find at least three things that are different about this universe, and then come back, and, depending on how much time we have left, we'll discuss possible implications, if any, of these differences. So go, explore, try to be back in, I don't know, fifteen, twenty minutes? SO we can also discuss.
"Any questions before you set out into an alternate reality?"
