OMG I Could Just PIE - Tuesday, Second Period [07/27].

"Hey, everyone!" Summer greeted the class with the usual excitement for the ensuing WTF-ery, although, especially after last week, she was wondering if some of the charm was wearing off. Was she just too acclimated now to know what was decidedly gross? Were some things actually just not that gross anymore? Who knew? All she really knew for certain was that, at the very least, the next words out of her mouth should cause at least a visceral reaction in some of her students.

"Welcome to Vinegar Day! That's right! We're making Vinegar Pie! And vinegar jello! Because the pie is actually a really simple recipe, so we'll have time for both. It's just going to be a vinegar dessert extravaganza! So, without further ado, let's just get into it!"

"Now, this vinegar pie recipe is from the 1930s," said Summer, to preface her leading everyone through the recipe from crust to completion, "aka the Great Depression, so you kind of had to make do with what you have, and I'm just going to say this now, if I'm ever in a situation where I need pie so badly that I'm going to make a pie using vinegar....just end me now."

Why resort to vinegar in dire straights when cannibalism was literally right there?

Although she supposed at least a few of her students would happily take a vinegar pie over any of the stuff she whipped up while a domesticated apocalypse housewife for a few weeks.

Stark would definitely prefer the vinegar to cannibalism, thanks.

"I don't know that I'd use vinegar," Stark said. "But dessert wasn't really an option before I was here and here I wouldn't need to. Or I'd just not have the pie. I think."

Vinegar had its uses, even in cannibalism, but human was definitely a better primary ingredient.

Well, perhaps not in pie.

Maybe if Hannibal put enough meringue on the pie, it would hide the taste of the vinegar enough to make it palatable.

Nope. Ah, well. Valiant effort.

"And now," said Summer, looking at her own vinegar pie and vinegar jellies, "the moment of truth. And, as we sink our teeth into these particular delicacies, I'm curious to see what you guys think about their simplicity. Because there's really not a lot here, just an ingredient that a lot of people would find off-putting to be the focus of a dessert. Is there anything you might add to it to sort of elevate it, especially the pie, beyond its depression-era roots? Or do you think it's fine as it is? Or do you think this is pretty much proof positive that we should never use the words 'vinegar' and 'pie' together in close conjuction ever again, as long as we all shall live?"

"Let's never do this again," Clare said, making a face. "Ever."

"It sounds worse than it tastes," Stark said after a bite of the pie. "I've tasted worse." He'd almost always tasted worse. "But I don't think I need to make it again." There were so many better pie options out there in the world (or other worlds).

"The jello is worse."

"I might try it with wine instead of vinegar," Hannibal suggested. "That would keep it true to the spirit, but more tasty."

The gummies could use some alcohol, but she is convinced the pie is absolutely vile and is definitely something she plans to serve to an enemy one day.
