Sociology of Violence (2nd) / Sociology of the Paranormal (6th)

Both of Grissom's classes get variations on the same short speech.

"Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I need to conclude this class immediately, and bump your final exam up to next week. I know that this disappoints some of you, but at least you'll appreciate the lighter courseload during your exam period, which is rapidly approaching. You will receive full term grades on your report cards, as I have collected more than a sufficient number of assignments from you.

I have also devised a study guide for you, due to the change in schedule, it only seems fair.

If you have any questions or concerns, now is the time to get those issues cleared up. My last office hours will be on Friday. Thank you all for an interesting semester, and best of luck in the future."

Slime, a government test, and Grissom leaving? Her birthday was clearly not her day this year.

Paige signs in the news of an exam next week fills her with fear.

Walter signs in. Finals already? Ugh.

Bel lingered after SoP to talk to Grissom ~~but zomg is leaving work right now and will be back in an hour~~.

Grissom gave Bel a lopsided smirk. "Nice to see you, Bel. If you're concerned about taking three exams so quickly, don't be. Your status as a TA is more than enough to excuse you from one, and if you can't handle two, arrangements can be made."

ZOMG, traffic ew. I am already home *laughs at you*

"No, that's not it," Bel said. "I wanted to talk to you about -- well, two things now, I guess. First I wanted to thank you for what you did to help get me out of jail."

Grissom looked Bel in the eyes directly. "The law enforcement officials of this town should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone deserves to have the evidence collected fairly and reviewed fully.

He paused for a moment, but his voice remained clear. "And I can admit... I'm glad that I could prove you were not responsible for the attack on Allie."

Bel nodded gravely. "She's my friend. I'd never do something like that to her," he said. "And if there's ever anything I can do to repay you for your help, just name it. But, um, why are we having the exams early? Are you going somewhere?"

"Repayment is both unnecessary and probably unethical, although I do appreciate the sentiment," he replied in a warmer tone than Bel was probably accustomed to from Grissom. "And yes, I am."

Bel's brow furrowed in worry. "But you're coming back, right?"

"It's highly unlikely, although I suppose the phrase 'never say never' exists for a reason."

"But why?" Bel said unhappily.

Grissom glanced around the room quickly, but seemingly satisfied, he turned back to Bel.

"I need to be with my family. I want to be with them. It's time."

"I kinda figured this would happen after Ms. Sidle left," Bel said. "But I'm sorry to see you go. You're like my favorite teacher."

Grissom nodded, his thanks for the compliment implied. "I can't say I'll be sorry to leave, but I will miss my students. I'm reluctant to leave now, with Allie still recovering, but with friend like you and Veronica, I doubt my assistance is needed any longer."

"You'll be missed," Bel said. "Who's going to let us watch porn or play video games as real class projects now?" he added jokingly.

"It was a documentary on porn, purely for educational purposes." Grissom's smirk was threatening to take Tokyo. "It aired on PBS. Seriously."

"I have no excuse for the video games, however. I thought it would be interesting to see you all play them," he shrugged, still smiling.

"I bet when you go back home no one else can say they helped a demon switch teams," Bel said.

"Those of us who trust you are glad to do so, and you made that choice, no one else." Grissom said plainly. "You should be proud."

"With that in mind, I do have a favor I'd like to ask of you."

"What is it?" Bel asked. "Whatever it is, I'll do my best to do it."

"I know I don't have to ask you to keep an eye out for Phoebe, or Allie, and I also realize that you and Veronica are not exactly friends. But whatever the two of you have managed to get yourselves into... please keep an eye on her, for me. She may not always be right, but she could have gotten herself killed trying to prove your innocence. And you probably have more in common than you think..."

He trailed off, knowing he was probably quickly losing him. "She's young, smart, determined, and reckless. Let's just say I'm familiar with the type. It would mean a lot to me, if you could keep an eye on her."

"I'll do what I can," Bel said solemnly. "She may not like it, though. But she doesn't have to know I'm watching out for her. I kinda owe her that at least anyway."

"I know she won't like it," Grissom said without pretense. "Thank you."

He put his hand out to shake Bel's.

Bel shook Grissom's hand. "I won't let you down," he said, meaning it in more ways than one.

"You have nothing to prove to me," he replied simply. "I'll see you tomorrow in class."
