Pirating!, Monday, period 1

A message had gone out handwavily to meet at the port this week. When they got there they’d find their teachers standing in front of an old fashioned tall ship, its sails furled, rigging stretched all the way up the masts.

“Welcome back,” Duke said. “Or just . . . welcome in general.” Since two of their students were out of town last week.

"Welcome to Pirating, lads," said an amused Edward, clearly in his element. "This beauty of a brig's the Jackdaw, my ship, stolen right from amidst a Spanish treasure fleet."

He gave a dramatic wave with his arm.

"She's a nation to the worthy free. And today, you lot get to climb 'round her like fools."

Duke had to bite back the urge to add “allegedly” a Nader his breath at the mention of the ship being stolen.

Well. The statute of limitations should be long over on it, anyway.

“Basically you’re going to do a little obstacle course.” He pointed out the path along the boat. “Up to the forecastle, scale the rigging, swing over to the center mast, grab a flag from the crow’s nest, then head back down to the poop deck any way you want to. First to hand their flag off to one of us wins.” He grinned. “Cheating is encouraged.”

Did Danny know he was in class before today? No. No, he did not.

"Jesus Christ," he grumbled, looking at the little course.

"I've climbed rigging before, Daniel," Steve said, deeply condescending.

"Not what you expected when you signed up?" Duke asked.

"That would involve me signing up in the first place," Danny replied dryly.

Duke grinned. "The moose got you, huh?"

That would be how he'd ended up co-teaching with an actual for-real pirate, too. Luckily, Edward seemed like mostly a good dude.

"Either your moose or that giraffe," Danny replied with a jerk of his chin in Steve's direction.

Duke, bless his heart, actually expected to see an office giraffe when he looked over. He barked out a quick laugh when he saw who Danny was pointing to.

"Aw, it's like a couple's class."

Danny rolled eyes at that, not rising to the bait. "Hope we didn't miss anything important last week. He was stuck in the hospital."

"Introductions." And Duke having a minor panic attack that two cops were in his pirate class. "What'd he do to himself this time?"

"Someone decided to kidnap him," Danny said with a tightness in his tone that discouraged details. Because it was still upsetting for Danny. And would probably cause him to snipe at Doris next time he saw her.

Yeah, Duke knew better than to press on that obvious wound. He winced in sympathy instead.

"Well. Glad he seems to have come through alright in the end."

"That's Steve for you," Danny replied with a sigh. The shit he put up with here. "But piracy?"

Really, Duke? Really?

Duke shook his head and shrugged. "Hey, don't blame me, this is all the moose. I met this guy like once before last week."

Though he definitely got up to his share of pirate-y activities in his spare time, yes.
