Pirating!, Monday, period 1

A message had gone out handwavily to meet at the port this week. When they got there they’d find their teachers standing in front of an old fashioned tall ship, its sails furled, rigging stretched all the way up the masts.

“Welcome back,” Duke said. “Or just . . . welcome in general.” Since two of their students were out of town last week.

"Welcome to Pirating, lads," said an amused Edward, clearly in his element. "This beauty of a brig's the Jackdaw, my ship, stolen right from amidst a Spanish treasure fleet."

He gave a dramatic wave with his arm.

"She's a nation to the worthy free. And today, you lot get to climb 'round her like fools."

Duke had to bite back the urge to add “allegedly” a Nader his breath at the mention of the ship being stolen.

Well. The statute of limitations should be long over on it, anyway.

“Basically you’re going to do a little obstacle course.” He pointed out the path along the boat. “Up to the forecastle, scale the rigging, swing over to the center mast, grab a flag from the crow’s nest, then head back down to the poop deck any way you want to. First to hand their flag off to one of us wins.” He grinned. “Cheating is encouraged.”

"Jesus Christ," he grumbled, looking at the little course.

"Not what you expected when you signed up?" Duke asked.

"That would involve me signing up in the first place," Danny replied dryly.

Duke grinned. "The moose got you, huh?"

That would be how he'd ended up co-teaching with an actual for-real pirate, too. Luckily, Edward seemed like mostly a good dude.

"You made it this week," Duke noted. "Heard you were having a bit of an adventure last time."

Steve shrugged a little sheepishly. "I'd rather have been on a ship, honestly."

Duke nodded. "We actually weren't on one last week, so you didn't miss much. Had to get ye olde introductions out of the way." He jerked his thumb over his shoulder. "He's Edward. The short one is Troy. Think you've met everyone else."

'Everyone else' being Duke himself and Steve's partner, yes.

Climb the rigging!

RNG declares Danny the winner! Then Steve, then Troy who I definitely didn't remember as being Miles because he has "spider" in his journal name SHUT UP.

TO BE FAIR, Troy did walk so Miles could websling Troy had a not-even-that-old football injury to contend with and the other people in the class were, like, older professionals and everything, but let's be honest, Troy was just sort of fascinated by everything he was climbing over and maybe just a little freaked out over how high up some of this stuff was, not that he would in a million years fess up to that and if anyone asked about it, he was just going to claim he saw a mermaid.

Steve was definitely taking this entirely too seriously and going far too hard for a guy who'd been strapped to a chair and tased last week. He was halfway through the rigging when his foot slipped and yanked his ribs hard enough to make him grunt.

It wasn't going to stop him, but it definitely slowed him down.

Stupid "getting close to forty" body.

Duke had maybe had a bit too much fun climbing all over the rigging while they were planning this class.

Edward owned the damned thing, and while he was of the opinion that climbing her rigging was a good time, he also did so every day.

So yes, he was smirking at the class the whole time.
