Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The good weather seemed to last throughout the day, but the bonfire was there to help with all your s'more needs all the same, much like all the other offerings of the food and drink tables.

Or maybe you just wanted to sit under a tree and judge people from afar. That was cool, too.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nell sighed. "No, I wasn't. But John and Leah were good to me. They saved me from the really horrible man who wanted to marry me. ... And he wouldn't have waited till I was old enough to make me do my wifely duties."

"But the dogs made me feel safer."

She'd mentioned something like that last time. Travis kind of hated the phrase "wifely duties".

"There's an animal shelter on the island," he said, rather than get into it. "Maybe I'll head over there sometime soon. See what they've got."

"Oh, that sounds like a good idea!" Nell said. "You can save some poor dog and have someone to keep you company."

"And I might just have a plant for you'un. I would have brought it, but I dodn't know you'd be here today."

"Didn't know I would be, either," Travis said. "But I followed the smoke smell and figured I'd stick around and enjoy myself a bit." He looked at her with a little smile. "You know, you can swing by the fire station any time you want. It's a public building. Or at least the first floor is."

"Oh you'un shouldn't encourage me," Nell said cheerfully. "Before you know it I might have it looking like a jungle."

"That would give me something to do. And they say plants are good for you."

"Oh, they are!" Nell assured him. "In so many ways! I can bring you over the one I planned and some others if you want."

"Bring along whatever you like. I can't guarantee I'll be that great at keeping them healthy, though."

"Huh... If I bring 'em maybe I'd have to come check up on 'em from time to time."

"Iiiit might be a good plan," Travis admitted. "Dogs can tell me when they need water. I don't speak 'plant' that well."

"I can help you with that," Nell assured him. "Are there any plans or colors you particularly like?"

"I'm sure whatever you pick will be fine," Travis assured her.

"Hmmmm... well, if you're sure..." Travis might regret that.

Pfft. It was just plants, right?

(He just might, yes.)

"Totally sure. You looking forward to anything this summer?"

"I'm taking Porfessor Skywalker's Try Not to Die class again," she said cheerfully. "That's always good fun!"

"Right. I, uh, saw that one. That's hyperbole, right? No one's really in deadly danger?"

"Oh I don't think he'd actually let anyone die," Nell said thoughtfully. "But there are times it feels like you might."

That was not reassuring.

"What does he have you guys do?"

"Oh, every time is different. We might have to eat something terrible or learn a twenty verse song or swim out to an island or herd some kind of animal. You usually get a choice about which crazy thing you want to do." She smiled up at him. "It's usually great fun, but I'm usually ready to collapse at the end."

"Huh. Sounds kind of like a reality show."

He never understood why anyone would sign up to be on a reality show.

"What's a reality show?"

You have to forgive Nell. They certainly didn't watch them back home and while she might occasionally watch a show or movie in the common room she was usualy reading, taking care of her plants, or doing something else she considered useful.

“It’s like a game show except the producers try to make the contestants fight each other,” Travis explained.

That was certainly a way to describe reality television.

"Oh dear," Nell said. "Well, we'uns don't have to fight each other in Professor Skywalker's class. I wouldn't like that at all."

“Don’t imagine you would,” Travis said. “Pretty sure you’d win, though.”

She clearly had the heart of a badass.

Nell giggled. "I'm not much on fightin' and I don't have the super powers some of they'uns have."

She considered for a minute. "But if there were the right kind of plants around..."

And then she remembered and her face fell. "And... and if it were life or death... I... I..."
