Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The good weather seemed to last throughout the day, but the bonfire was there to help with all your s'more needs all the same, much like all the other offerings of the food and drink tables.

Or maybe you just wanted to sit under a tree and judge people from afar. That was cool, too.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So much of this was overwhelming (even without the odd bits to take into account!), and Sakaki sort of just wanted to retreat into the dorms and start getting situated in her new room, but she really should eat something, so she picked a few things onto a plate and looked around before figuring out which table seemed most out of the way and went to have a seat to nibble on her food in peace and quiet.

Or as much peace and quiet as she was likely to get at an event like this, which she figured wasn't going to be very peaceful or quiet at all...

The picnic offered an escape from making Mother's Day flower arrangements at the flower shop, and even if this kind of event was something she generally attended, Lucille decided to stop by. She picked up a pastry and a cup of tea and found a chair in the shade.

Seivarden was here to judge from afar, although she was mostly just judging the eating with bare hands, and stayed far away enough not to have to watch.

She had also brought her own tea, to avoid any teabags.

Wanda had done the adult thing and gotten an apartment (that she didn't manifest magically, thank you), and she should really focus on moving in and getting furniture so she wasn't sleeping on the floor tonight.

But, hey, the call of free food was too much to ignore and she had told Steve she would be social, so here she was. Mostly focusing on the food.

Perfectly content to no longer be a student or to pursue a teaching path as seemed popular with literally every other one of my adult characters her peers, Tisarwat was glad to just be able to enjoy the picnic, scope out some of the newer and returning faces, sip her tea, and stubbornly avoiding having anything to do with the copious amounts of finger food these events always involved.

Alara had spent the last couple of weeks handwavily on Xeyala and had gotten in last night.

She decided to spend some time down at the picnic, it felt weird to think she had already been in Fandom for a year. She helped herself to some food and decided to walk around the picnic for a bit.

While Enola’s upbringing was anything but traditional, Mrs. Lane had always insisted on a proper tea. And seeing that there were elements available on the picnic table, Enola had picked out each one and set it up on the small table in front of her and was gleefully enjoying it without a hint of any manners.

It still felt odd not to use her title, but Seivarden was going to stick to using names. She grinned.

"Trying to avoid the finger food too?"

It was still generally odd interacting with Seivarden here at all now, but that didn't mean she wouldn't offer a smile back.

"Of course," she said, with a shake of her head, a roll of her lilac eyes, and the sort of sigh that would accompany any conversation with anyone who truly understood how horrific it all was. "I guess I'll just have to pick up some actual civilized food on the way home."

Because Amaat only knew what happened when either she or Lucille tried to cook anything.

But her attention shifted back to Seivarden.

"How've you been?"

She really hadn't been doing a very good job with her assignment about keeping an eye on her, had she?

Astrid had her own traditions for these sorts of things, and she certainly had no reason to change any of that now. So after getting things squared away with her little sibling and making sure everything was good there, she took a break to grab some food that would barely be touched, because she would be sitting off to the side under a tree with a sketchbook, occasionally glancing up at the crowd and picking out some of the more interesting ones among the crowd.

Or mosly just amusing herself by drawing a lot of Sidon (he always was one of her favorite subjects) looming over pretty much everything.

Ulysses had actually retreated underneath a tree to sit and people-watch. However, the usual judging seemed not to be happening, because he seemed to just be kind of stuck boggling. You know, he'd graduated, but he was still here and he'd even signed up for a class, but not as one of the non-graduated students but also not as one of the townies --

He kind of even looked like he was boggling. No one tell him.

"Oh, not to bad," Seivarden said, avoiding mentioning the week of misery and constant intoxication.

"And you? Oh, by the way, Breq sent me a box of decent arrack to serve as a special at Caritas on Mondays, in case you miss it."

There had been two boxes, originally.

Lucille might have seen the girl in town, but now, as she walked past, she said:

"Are you by any chance from my time, or is the multiverse making appearances deceptive?"

"I will always miss decent arrack," Tisarwat admitted, with a shake of her head. She'd grown to appreciate some of the alcohol on this planet a little more over the years, but nothing could really compare to decent arrack. She still had a bottle of her own that she'd tucked away for either an exceptionally good celebration or an exceptionally terrible situation, although she supposed she might not have to keep such a tight hold on it anymore, since they could now get back...

"Are you going to do it this Monday?" she asked, because she definitely wouldn't want to miss it when she did.

Troy had filled his plate like a person who couldn't decide what they wanted to eat the most, because that was exactly what happened, and he got himself a drink and tried to carefully balance it all as he made his way to a table so he could enjoy it while trying to decide if he wanted to lean into a more social strategy of going out and talking to people or just sort of sit back and wait for the people to come to him.

The latter, after all, didn't exactly work as well at this school as it had at his old school...and the incoming class seemed pretty small, he could probably bust out meeting them all in, like, two seconds flat or something.

Tisarwat was just going to let her skeptical glance around the picnic and the familiar but significant lack of gloves on most people while eating food with their hands speak for itself on the odds of that happening before concluding it with a pointed sip of her tea.

Which was honestly just exaggerated for the sake of the fact that she was talking to Seivarden, but she figured she'd appreciate it.

"You should provide gloves, then, too," she realized. "Have the option available for anyone who wants to appreciate it fully...from a cultural perspective."

It was little things like that, after all, that sparked potential habits or considerations...

There wasn't really much reason for Rey to come to these things, but there was free food and some habits were hard to break. Besides, she liked seeing the new faces. She could show up for a while and take a seat at a table with her plate and people watch.

Tahani was there with a plate of fresh fruit, sitting under a tree in her fabulous new maxi dress and hate, casually judging the fashion choices of everyone who walked past.
