Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

As was usually the case with these things, good weather was once more blessing the gathering of Fandom folk new and old. There was a bonfire, but it was mostly for decoration. And for s'mores, the makings of which were available at one of the nearby tables.

There was plenty of food, and there were tables and chairs set up all across the lawn (with light dustings of glitter where you least suspected it, naturally), and everything was ready for another welcome picnic!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nick had spent a couple weeks back in LA, invading the loft, yelling about swear jars, and now he was back.

Yeah, it surprised him too.

There was free food here, though. Plus.

"Nick!"

Once Summer had worked through the fun that was informing her new school-assigned friend that he was, in fact, working for the school now, she thought this was a good chance to make good on how she kept saying she was going to check in on her last school-assigned friend by actually doing it.

"Back for more, I see?"

"Yeah, it's a shock," he said. "How've you been?"

"Eh," Summer shrugged, since that always seemed to be a loaded question with her. "Pretty good, overall. I think I should be the one asking you that question, especially after the week before last..."

If she trailed off a little leadingly just to get a general idea of how he handled the week before last by reaction alone, well...that was typically how she prefered to try to guage these things.

"Oh, I'm great. Just got back from LA," he said. "Great time."

Yup. Still just keepin' on, then, huh, Nick?

"LA?" Summer asked with a bit of a wry smirk. "You sure it wasn't Egypt?"

Because, you know, there was a river there he might be interested in, a river called something like...what was it, again? De Nile?

"Nooo," he said slowly. "I stayed at the loft. Where I still pay rent and had to fight for my room for two weeks."

Did Jessica intend to sneak up on Nick. No. But suddenly she appeared next to him looking hungover and drinking spiked coffee. “Nick,” she said with a nod. “‘Sup?”

"Jessica," he greeted her. "Good night last night?"

"Fantastic," she said flatly and then held out a bottle of bourbon. "Someone just gave me this. Too nice for my taste. You want it?"

"Sure," he said, reaching for it. "Who's handing out bottles at a picnic?"

Besides her, just now.

"My teaching buddy, Lecter," she said nodding her head at the well dressed man. "And I got a steak sandwich too. And one with kale."

She made a face at the word kale.

As someone who eschewed vegetables as a general rule, Nick was appropriately horrified. "Someone gave you kale? That man is sending you a message."

"Oh? What kind of message is that?" Jessica asked, raising an eyebrow.

"He's saying 'keep an eye on me, I put kale on food.'"

Nick had never even had kale. There was no reason for this bias.

He had no complaints about the booze at least.

"That's quite a message," Jessica said nodding solemnly and trying not to smile. "Very profound. He does have good taste in bourbon. Does that send another message?"

"That he's trying but doesn't know you very well," Nick decided. "Luckily you have friends."

Friends.

Jessica hadn’t thought about that really. Friends were for other people. She had drinking buddies.

Then again maybe this place was different for her.

“Good point. Don’t drink it alone,” she advised. “Make sure you share it with someone. Who also doesn’t like kale.”

"Normally I'd think that'd be you but we might have to add some paint thinner to this," Nick said, regarding the bottle.

Jessica smiled and pulled out her flask. “Well I can always bring my own,” she pointed out.
