Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

As was usually the case with these things, good weather was once more blessing the gathering of Fandom folk new and old. There was a bonfire, but it was mostly for decoration. And for s'mores, the makings of which were available at one of the nearby tables.

There was plenty of food, and there were tables and chairs set up all across the lawn (with light dustings of glitter where you least suspected it, naturally), and everything was ready for another welcome picnic!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

A picnic was very wholesome. Sam approved. And the foods appeared normal and that borking chef was nowhere to be found.

Perhaps this summer of instructing the youth of America would go better than he feared. Nothing here seemed particularly weird. There was hope that this was, indeed, a nice normal island with a nice, normal summer camp.

Well. Looked like that wasn't a nickname.

"Sam?" Tony ventured.

Sam the Eagle was a descriptor! Not like some other Sams who might be called, say, Falcon as a nickname. Sorry, Tony.

"I am Sam. And you are?"

Hey, his Sam could also talk to birds! Marvel... Marvel could be heckin' weird.

"Tony Stark," he said, offering a hand. Because it was polite. "Your 'teaching buddy'."

Now Tony could tell Sam that he had conversed with an American Bald Eagle, the most noble of birds!

"I see. A pleasure to meet you, Tony." Shaking hands was just common decency, even if Sam had wings instead of hands. Because Sam was a large felt bird.

Yes, Tony had noticed that. It was A Thing. A thing that he was going to share with Steve with a lot of wine.

"Well, uh, welcome to Fandom. It can be a bit of an adventure."

"I am not looking for adventure. I was told this would be a wholesome and thoroughly normal summer camp!"

Sam had read the brochure. The brochure lied. And maybe Sam shouldn't have let any of his coworkers make his travel arrangements.

"...oh," Tony said slowly. "Well. By who?"

BECAUSE SAM? SAM, NO.

"There was a brochure," Sam said defensively. "Very official looking. The frog assured me this would be an excellent spot to spend my summer."

The frog had lied!

"Well, maybe he mistook the locations?" Tony ventured.

"Kermit has betrayed me."

It was possible there were many Muppets waiting anxiously, with popcorn, for a furious missive from Sam.

"It won't be that bad," Tony assured him. "It's actually very nice."

"Hmmpf. I would hope so. I was told it would not be weird. Is this a weird island?"

Poor Sam. And he hadn't even seen Beaker yet.

"Meep meep meep meeep meep mee!" Beaker shrieked, practically vibrating with excitement. "MEEEEEEEEE!"

"Absolutely not," Sam snapped. "Unacceptable!"

He had been assured of a quiet summer!

Prepare for a giant, unasked for hug, Sam! You know you love it!

"MEEP!"

Sam did not love it! Beaker hugs were, like everything about Beaker, weird.

"There will be no hugging! Why are you here?"

"Meep meep meep mee--" Beaker said, launching into an extensive explanation as he pointed to Anakin, "--mee meep mee meep--" explosion noises, "--meep meep!"

See? Completely reasonable reason to be here!

Sam just sighed. Very loudly. More than once.

Well, get used to that response, Sam. Just sayin'.

"Meep meep meep mee!" Beaker concluded. "Meep mee?"

And how are you here, Sam?

"The frog handed me a brochure! He said this was a very normal and American summer camp where I could spend a peaceful summer. The frog lied."

Such a betrayal. What had Sam ever done to deserve this?"

"Meep meep meep," Beaker said sympathetically.

"Will you be here the whole summer?" Sam asked suspiciously.

Maybe Beaker was just visiting! Perhaps his presence was a prank!

"Meep meep meep!"

The whole summer, Sam! And helping on a Wednesday for a thing entirely devoted to being insane!

Sam was going to be absolutely horrified by Wednesdays.

"Of course you are."
