Shop Class

The Danger Room Shop looked like, of all things, a standard shop classroom this morning. Sam was sitting on the desk, swinging her feet and drinking copious amounts of coffee from a thermos that was on her right side.

On her left side was a roll of duct tape, a spool of elastic, and an electric cattle prod. She kept glancing around the room, keeping a vigilant eye out for small holographic children, many-teethed black things, and piranha, but hadn't seen any yet. Even if she did occasionally twitch.

A large table in the front of the room held many small coniferous trees--both Cypress and Pine. Another table held woods of a far more inferior type, but still suitable for building purposes. Another table has shovels, fertilizer, potting soil, ceramic pots, tubing, and anything else that might be found in a nursery.

Sam addressed the class. "Morning. I thought we'd try something new today and actually build something." She grinned. "I know, it's kind of a novel approach to our Shop Class, but try to contain yourselves. Your assignment is to make a little home for the tiny trees," she pointed to the table of conifers.

"Today, I'd like you to write 100 words about the proper habitat (researched, please) for the conifer you've chosen, and sketch the habitat, that you think would be best, based on that research. For Wednesday, you'll build that habitat with the materials here. Please let me know if you need additional materials. The trees will be yours to keep, plant outside, or give to someone else, once Mac grades the projects."

"Any questions?"

"I picked the Ponderosa Pine. It's sturdy and used for windbreaks and shelter planting. So when it grows up, it's gonna do some good for the other trees around it. It ends up having long needles, up to 8 inches. And it's an evergreen, so it won't lose its leaves or needles or whatever during the winter. When it's young, its bark is black and scaley to protect itself against the weather. It can grow in all different types of soil, but I'll probably make a habitat with fairly dry soil to get it used to the rough times. Basically, I won't pamper it with moist soil, but I won't torture it with really dry soil either. Middle ground so it can grow and have a good chance to adapt either way. Plus I'll give it enough fertilizer to feed it without giving it too much."

"I know shelter." The Ponderosa was just about the only tree he did know because of its sheltering abilities.
