Shop Class
The Danger Room Shop looked like, of all things, a standard shop classroom this morning. Sam was sitting on the desk, swinging her feet and drinking copious amounts of coffee from a thermos that was on her right side.
On her left side was a roll of duct tape, a spool of elastic, and an electric cattle prod. She kept glancing around the room, keeping a vigilant eye out for small holographic children, many-teethed black things, and piranha, but hadn't seen any yet. Even if she did occasionally twitch.
A large table in the front of the room held many small coniferous trees--both Cypress and Pine. Another table held woods of a far more inferior type, but still suitable for building purposes. Another table has shovels, fertilizer, potting soil, ceramic pots, tubing, and anything else that might be found in a nursery.
Sam addressed the class. "Morning. I thought we'd try something new today and actually build something." She grinned. "I know, it's kind of a novel approach to our Shop Class, but try to contain yourselves. Your assignment is to make a little home for the tiny trees," she pointed to the table of conifers.
"Today, I'd like you to write 100 words about the proper habitat (researched, please) for the conifer you've chosen, and sketch the habitat, that you think would be best, based on that research. For Wednesday, you'll build that habitat with the materials here. Please let me know if you need additional materials. The trees will be yours to keep, plant outside, or give to someone else, once Mac grades the projects."
"Any questions?"

Descriptions of the Habitats
Re: Descriptions of the Habitats
Plus silver=pretty. My habitat will have at least three containers of increasing size in it for transplanting the cypress -- because boy, do those babies grow fast! -- and will be lined with dry pine bark, peat moss, and builder's sand for protecting and supporting the rootball and trunk."Oh look, sketchysketchysketchy. Because that doesn't require Xander to, like, make eye-contact with anybody who might've heard the radio last night.
Re: Descriptions of the Habitats
It's handwaving, because her mun sucks at plants and is feeling much too lazy to research them after work today. And her not-flailing certainly doesn't involvevery muchany peering over Xander's shoulder in hopes ofcheatinggetting some inspiration from his ideas.Re: Descriptions of the Habitats

Which it totally is.
Totally.

Re: Descriptions of the Habitats
"I picked the bald cypress tree. The bald cypress tree requires a deciduous habitat with with some sun. It can grow in a variety of soils including wet, dry and compacted. They have a fine texture with small leaves that are spirally around the stem. Their colors range from green to brown to orange. My habitat will be a small, plastic box probably, set up just off the ground so the wet soil can drain."
And he sketches.
Re: Descriptions of the Habitats
"I chose a Loblolly Pine. They are native to the southeastern United States, but grow other places as well. Loblolly means 'a low wet place' and they grow in such places, but not exclusively, and can be found acidic sandy soil. They grow very rapidly.
My habitat will have moist soil and ways of keeping it moist, but will also have to allow for drainage so the tree doesn't drown. And it will be fairly easy to disassemble, so that the tree can be moved when it grows too large for the original habitat."
And then he sketched something he thought would work. Hoped would work.
