Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of chairs and tables by the bonfire, and some further out on the lawn for anyone who might want to enjoy their food alone, or just gaze at the new folks and try to figure them out. All of these potential activities were valid!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Oh, that was a look, to be sure.

A look that, in Juillenne's world, was generally reserved for Queens. Or at least, it had been. That would probably change, now.

"How are you finding the place so far?" she asked. Forgive her if she didn't get up, Lydia, but it was a bit of a hassle with the crutch.

"Friendly." It wasn't exactly a criticism so much as - no, seriously, people here were so friendly. Lydia was Lydia, but she was also originally from New York, and there was a lot of just random, polite conversation going on today.

But, that being said, she didn't hate it, and so Juillenne got a little smile in return. "I take it you're not new."

"Almost two years here," Jules confirmed. "And it's a small enough population that the new arrivals are usually pretty noticeable."

"Juillenne Milone." And then she nodded to the mountain cat currently making short work of a plate of boneless chicken wings. "And that is Camden."

"Hi, Camden," Lydia said, because it seemed like a good idea to greet the mountain cat. "Lydia Deetz, and it's nice to meet you, Juillenne. Got any wisdom gleaned from those two years?"

Because she was loving everything she'd heard, so far.

"If you see something small and green scurrying about, it's best to avoid it," she advised. "Those are called gremlins, and their bite is venomous."

Jules had yet to have any trouble with them herself, personally, but she'd seen the effects often enough.

"Though," she added, after a moment's consideration. "Not a deadly type of venom. Hallucinogenic. It tends to make people do things they find horribly embarrassing upon recovery, but there are no lasting ill effects."

Lydia - who would absolutely be getting gremlin-bit into being something sparkly and frilly at some point - looked alarmed. "And they're, like, native to the island?"
legionqueen: (ummmmm)

"Yes," Jules confirmed. "Some call them a nuisance, which I suppose is technically correct, but they were here first, so it would be terribly rude of us to declare that just because we don't go around biting people, we deserve to run them off."

Oh, hello kindred spirit, want to be best friends?

"They were here first," Lydia agreed. "It's not their fault we decided to move in, too. Do you know if there's anything that, like, really annoys them so I can be sure not to do it?"

Tacky sculptures? Ugly redecoration?

"Hmm," Jules hummed. "To be honest, I think they can be a little capricious. What they'll ignore one day seems to be worth a bite the next at the whim at whoever's writing thinks will be funnier."
utterly_alone: (pos: curious)

"Then I'll just wear tall boots," Lydia decided, "and leave them be as best I can."

And take pictures of them when she saw them, which...you know, was how she'd gotten into the other mess, so the boots probably wouldn't save her.
legionqueen: (ummmmm)

Yeah, 'taking pictures' was absolutely the sort of thing that the gremlins might be fine with one minute and take horrible offense to the next. So... good luck with that, Lydia.

"Wise," she agreed, turning her head just a little to give the food table a good look-over. And... there went a piece of pie, whipping right past them and surely to meet its doom splattered on the back of some poor unsuspecting picnic-goers head.

"Did you mean to do that?" Lydia wondered, watching the pie go flying.

Also, there were other questions she had now, but she'd start with that one.
legionqueen: (i don't think so)

"Only in the sense that I meant for it to come to me. At a much more sedate pace."

Funny how a gift that had evolved for use in combat was a struggle to adapt for 'getting snacks without having to get up' purposes.
