Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of chairs and tables by the bonfire, and some further out on the lawn for anyone who might want to enjoy their food alone, or just gaze at the new folks and try to figure them out. All of these potential activities were valid!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nina, who had a purple flower crown and a matching heart-topped wand in hand, was about as far as one could get from goth as a person could be but, like, this girl rocked it?

"Welcome to the island!!!!!!!!!!"

A beat.

"Has anyone warned you about glitter???????????"

Because, like, dressed like that the new girl was going to have some serious glitter problems.

Okay so first of all, that was a lot of enthusiasm, but Lydia didn't exactly hate it.

It was just a lot.

"I saw the sign at the airport," Lydia offered, hesitant. "There was a lot of glitter on it, but I just thought it was...for that sign."

Not like, all signs. Or like, general life.

"Glitter is....... basically omnipresent," she explained. "Like, not always in huge quantities but you've always got to be prepared for it??????????"

Nina was totally at blame for at least some of the glitter.

"I'm Nina Argentum, by the way," she added. "It's great to meet you!!!!!!!!!!:

"Lydia Deetz," she said, waving one lacily-gloved hand. "You seem like a glitter enthusiast, Nina."

She basically seemed like, the spirit of glitter. Which meant that Lydia appreciated the warning, but yeah, she was also hip to the fact that this girl might be one of the sources to look out for. "I'm gonna guess you're not new."

She really was.

Right up until something needed the steel underneath the glitter.

"I can't deny either of those things," she admitted. "I've, like, been here for two and half years???????? And my brother's gone here too and my dad lives on the island..........."

It was sort of a family thing to be here, at this rate.

"I'm hoping that's a good thing?" Lydia asked, unable to keep from wincing.

Considering that one of the major perks of being here for her was being away from her dad and Delia....

"For me, yeah," she said, watching curiously. "But, like, there's a lot of people here who are glad their family isn't around.........."

"I'm one of them," Lydia admitted, as though it wasn't already abundantly obvious. "This is a nice break from being - you know." She just sort of vaguely gestured. "Around them."

Though she did miss the Maitlands already. Hopefully Delia wouldn't figure out a way to drive them out while Lydia was gone, but everyone had seemed to be on okay terms when she'd left.

Nina's smile was sympathetic even if she didn't really get it herself.

"That definitely happens a lot here," she said, nodding. "Like, people who come here are usually either getting away from something or looking for something........."

"My dad sent me to boarding school so I'd stop annoying my stepmother," Lydia offered so Nina would know what camp she belonged in. Not that Lydia had done anything annoying beyond existing. "But it's a lot better than I thought it'd be, so far."

Though, really, if it had been miserable, that might have even been better in Lydia's book. All the better to lie in bed and be hopelessly sad.

"I'm an orphan and found a family here," she shared back since it only seemed fair. "It's a fun place, though it can get really dangerous here too..........."

"How dangerous?" Lydia asked, somewhere between interested and wary. "I mean, it's been - a lot different from what I thought I was getting into with boarding school, already."

Like a lot different.

"It's really hard to quantify," she said. "Like, sometimes it's just weird, like we'll have candy corn falling from the sky or wake up and find that everything in a common room, but only one common room, is made of couch cushions????????? But other times it's molten rivers of hot chocolate and murderous ice angels??????????"

Like, Nina thought that was fun, but she knew other people didn't.
