Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of chairs and tables by the bonfire, and some further out on the lawn for anyone who might want to enjoy their food alone, or just gaze at the new folks and try to figure them out. All of these potential activities were valid!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Juuuuuuuuuuuuuleeeeeeeeeees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Caaaaaaaaaaaaam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sure, she didn't have to say it that way but, as she posed in front of them both, with her flower crown and wand, Nina beamed, then dropped a curtsy.

"May I sit??????????????"

"Of course," Jules said, though she had to bite her lip to hold back a sigh at the curtsy.

There had been... a lot of that when she'd gone back to Fennbirn for the break.

Nina grinned as she folded herself into place.

"I suppose a queen shouldn't curtsy to a queen," Nina admitted, "but it seemed like the thing to do........."

Not that Nina was really a queen.

"I do like the crown," Jules had to admit. Perhaps not surprising, given that she was a naturalist after all. "Is this a new development?"

She'd gone home for part of the summer and come back a Queen, that someone else might have done something similar wasn't entirely out of the question.

"I'm not really one," she confessed, smiling. "Dad gave them to me and, like, since I'm literally building myself a castle this semester..........."

She was sort of a queen?

"I did see that on the list of classes," Jules acknowledged. "I might have to stop by and admire the progress sometime."

She hadn't signed up because she wasn't sure how useful she would be with a project like that ~~and more importantly because the player's brain might explode~~.

"It'll start off slow," Nina said, bouncing a bit in place. "Like, we have to start by designing it and I do want everyone involved to have some say in what it will look like.........."

Because why else crowd-source a castle?

"Just how much are you going to rely on consensus before proceeding to the next step?" Jules had to ask.

Months of working with a Council made up of the various gifted factions had proved that consensus was often a difficult goal to reach.

"Not at all," Nina said firmly.

She, too, was used to seeing how factions failed to reach a consensus with any speed.

"Well......... I want everyone's ideas and then I'll organize them and tell them what we're going to do," she explained. She'd decided this weeks ago. "Like, no one's ideas are going to be rejected out of hand, everything will be considered, but I'm making the final call on all of it mostly because, like, we just don't have time to argue and Wayne's in my class????????? So the arguing could go on for forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"You're not wrong, there," Jules said, around a snicker. Look, she liked Wayne, but he was absolutely one of the most stubborn people she'd ever met.

Which was saying a lot, considering who she'd grown up with.

Oh god, Arsinoe and Wayne meeting would be a disaster. Or hilarious. Or both.

Wayne was great but... yeah...

"Right????????" she said, giggling. "So, like, I'll have final veto power on anything, but I definitely want to hear everyone's ideas and, if I can, incorporate them!!!!!!!!!"

Because despite her claiming it was her castle, for the Queendom of Ninatopia, it was really a castle for everyone.

"How big are we thinking, here?" Jules asked. "Children's play structure sized or... actual, usable rooms sized?"

"I'm still waiting on the school board to tell me where I can put it," she admitted, since even though she had permission, she didn't yet have space. "So I'm not quite sure how much room we'll have to work with yet.........."

But that was another reason for two weeks of designing a castle. It gave things like that time!

"But, like, what I was thinking was something about the size of a small one-story starter house?????? So, like, usable rooms for older kids," she flashed a smile, because don't think she wouldn't be sweeping through that castle like a queen, Jules, "but not too big of a footprint in the real estate of the island???????? Turrets and towers will go higher, of course, and if we need more space inside......."

Nina shrugged.

"We're building it from scratch, so it's not hard to add spells to the mortar and bricks to make the place larger on the inside, should we need that???????"

"It's not hard to add spells, she says," Jules said, shaking her head. "Hah."

It was a testament to how far her understanding of different worlds had come that she didn't instinctively make a face at the mention of magic.

"I've been working on them all summer," she admitted, a bit ruefully. "If I'd had to come up with them on the fly, I'd have had a meltdown????????"

Nina was good at magic, really good at it. But for this sort of thing she needed time.

Battle magic was different.

"Well, so long as you know what you're doing," Jules said. And Nina, for the most part, seemed to.

Unlike Arsinoe, who'd taken what little Madrigal had been able to teach her and then kind of just... made shit up.

Making shit up was bad. Making shit up was how you got rabid feral zombie bears.

Please don't make rabid feral zombie bears, Nina. Once was enough.
