Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of chairs and tables by the bonfire, and some further out on the lawn for anyone who might want to enjoy their food alone, or just gaze at the new folks and try to figure them out. All of these potential activities were valid!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So is that part of the temporal thing?" Lydia asked, once she was over being a little startled by his sudden appearance. "Or are you a ghost or something?"

Ghosts, in her experience, could do pretty much anything.

"No, that's Klaus' thing," he said dryly. Not that she knew who the heck Klaus was. Probably. "It's spacial teleportation. Temporal is different."

"So how are you doing it?" No, of course she had no idea who Klaus was, but he would definitely be Lydia's favorite Hargreeves.

That was fair. Maybe she could join his future/past cult!

"Not magic," he grumbled. Belle, you were the worst. "Does the Umbrella Academy mean anything to you?"

Lydia would make a wonderful Destiny's Child.

"Should it?" She kind of felt bad, because it really didn't ring a bell but maybe it was a book she hadn't read, or a movie she hadn't seen? It wasn't like Lydia got out much.

"No, probably not." It had been a very long time ago. For him, less long for the time it was right now. "Well, some people are born with abilities like that. And I happen to be one of them."

"Lucky." Seriously, it looked incredibly handy. "I thought you had to die to do cool things like that."

It was a lot less morbid to just be born special, she supposed. "So you can teleport? Got any other tricks?"

Did being an assassin count as a trick? Probably.

"A few," he agreed, squinting out at the crowd. "Let's just stick with the normal teleportation for now."

Wait, there was also crippling emotional issues! Those counted, right?

Lydia would never have gotten to where she was today without crippling emotional issues, let's be honest.

"I think you're the weirdest person I've met so far." That was a compliment, Five! And she didn't even know your weird name, yet.

"Thanks, I guess?" He didn't know her name either, so there was that. But he did glance at her out of the corner of his eye and offered a handshake as he said, "Number Five Hargreeves."

Like the old man he was.

"Lydia Deetz," she replied, shaking that offered hand. Look, Lydia could act old with the best of them. It wasn't like she spent a lot of time around other teenagers. "Is your name really Number Five? Weird."

Again, kind of said in an admiring way!

So she picked the actual 58 year old man to befriend. That tracked, you know.

"Less weird if you knew anything about my father," he replied dryly. "And yes, it's my actual name. My siblings all picked other ones to go by, but Five works fine for me."

"Most people don't pick their names," Lydia pointed out.

At least, she hadn't, not that she objected to it.

"My father's pretty bad but he's not that bad," she added. Just sort of...ineffective.

That sounded worse somehow. All the Hargreeves children would walk all over him.

And not just because Allison.

"Most people aren't adopted by a reclusive billionaire with delusions of grandeur."

Lydia fairly walked all over Charles, much less to say how Delia treated him.

"That sounds like a book I'd read," she told him honestly. "You've got a bunch of siblings?"

She, naturally, was an only child. All the better to be endlessly lonely.

"Six of them." You can guess their names easily.

"How'd you get stuck as five of seven?" Lydia wondered. "Also, I'm an only child and that sounds like a literal nightmare."

Way worse than the reclusive billionaire dad part.

"I was the fifth one he found, presumably," he replied dryly. "There were a lot of kids born at the same time as us. We were just the ones he managed to get."

Sure. That made sense to people outside the canon.

"Can you all teleport?" Lydia was keeping up with the important parts, at least. She wouldn't mind having siblings if it meant they all had a superpower, probably, though it might also make them more annoying.

"No, they all have different powers. Except Vanya. She's normal." She most decidedly was not.

But he had mixed feelings about that book still. It was good to have something to tell him what he missed out on, but also... yikes, Vanya.

"Sucks for Vanya," Lydia decided. "Normal people are boring, though if you're around teleporting or whatever, at least she's probably not willfully normal."

The way people could just purposely not see things killed her, a little.

"She was the only one of them who would listen," he said a bit wistfully, glancing away like the old man he was.

"Maybe that's her power," Lydia suggested. "Listening."

It honest-to-goodness was kind of Lydia's gift. Just being observant.

Five shot her A Look for that one. "Regardless. She was normal. And the rest of us were supposed to fight crime or whatever."

"And instead you're here, and secretly old," Lydia noted.

Didn't look a lot like fighting crime, to her. No judgement, but just saying.
