Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of chairs and tables by the bonfire, and some further out on the lawn for anyone who might want to enjoy their food alone, or just gaze at the new folks and try to figure them out. All of these potential activities were valid!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Not a whole lot of goths came through this school. Or like, alternative kids of any stripe, really. So when Ulysses saw someone with a veil, it kinda caught his interest.

If only to figure out whether this was a look, or just what people generally wore where she was from.

"Hey," he said, wandering over to Lydia. "You new?"

He knew she was, but sometimes the obvious made for the best opener.

"Very," Lydia answered, looking over the new guy with interest. "Are you?"

He seemed like someone else who probably appreciated that this boarding school didn't require uniforms.

That was a very nice way of saying he looked like he got dressed in the dark, and seemed to make it all work together by sheer dumb luck.

"Uh, no, actually," Ulysses said. "Halfway through my second year here, yeah."

Lydia's brows raised just slightly. Oh, wow, a veteran. Even her big sibling had only been here a semester or something. "Do you like it?"

"Well... Definitely doesn't get boring a lot," Ulysses hazarded, sticking his phone in his pocket, and immediately using that newly-freed hand to card through his curls. "Last year at this thing, I got kidnapped into a volcano."

Was he not supposed to say these things to the new kids? Too bad.

Fortunately, this particular new kid was really, really hard to faze.

She did look around, though, and noted, "Not a local volcano, I take it."

"Kinda is," Ulysses corrected her. "Just not on this island."

The vague hand gesture was probably meant to convey another island. Maybe even the direction said island maybe was.

But really, it was just what happened when he had a hand free.

"Mmm." So there were other islands. And a volcano, here in the Atlantic Ocean. Okay.

"It looks like it was a failed kidnapping," she noted mildly. "That's good."

"We were in there for a few days," Ulysses said, far too easily. "Still mad my favorite jacket got ruined."

Aaand his brain finally caught up with what he was saying. To a new kid.

"Not that that kind of thing happens like, all the time, here."

"Oh, sure," Lydia said agreeably. Lydia had very recently nearly married a demon before there had been giant sandworm intervention, so even if that kind of thing did happen all the time...that'd probably be okay. "Just occasional kidnappings."

She paused, and thinking it was probably polite at this point, added, "I'm Lydia."

"Oh, yeah, right," Ulysses said, because he had not factored any politeness into things, and may accidentally have left this conversation with zero idea what her name was if she hadn't gotten there first. "I'm Ulysses. Hi. And you... sound like you're gonna be fine on this island."

"I'll probably be okay," she agreed. "I'm kind of - I have some recent experience with the strange and unusual, shall we say."

"Kinda figured," Ulysses admitted, as if that wasn't already clear. "usually, I'd expect that whole... kidnapping story to get a little --" Yes, he did hold his thumb and forefinger a tiny bit apart to convey that 'little'. "-- more of a reaction."

That got a teeny little smile out of her. "Kidnappings are new," she acquiesced. "But I almost got married to a demonic bioexorcist to save some friends of mine who are dead, a little while ago? So my scale might be a little - skewed." A pause, and, "Not that the volcano thing sounds like it was any fun at all."

Ulysses squinted at her a second.

Then he held up just the one finger. "Lemme ask you a question," he started. "If you were being held hostage by a -- a goat man monster type thing, would you try to seduce it so it would let you go?"

Yes, this was a question based on real events.

"Not on purpose." Lydia did not think she'd be very good at seducing anyone. The marriage thing had been for immigration purposes, essentially. "Why, is that how you got out of the volcano?"

Props, if so.

"No, no it was not," Ulysses said with a shake of his head that did a fun thing with his curls. "It was an insane idea --" ALEXIS. "-- and everyone who participated in it got strung up above the lava pit."

No, he had not taken part in that. And not just because seduction wasn't really one of his skills, either.

"Anyway, so you're already one up on people who've actually faced some Fandom bullshit before."

She would still never be ready for all of it. Who could be prepared for something like AU children?

"This is way different from what I figured I'd be in for when my dad decided to send me to boarding school," she shared. Because seriously.

"Pretty sure that's the typical reaction, whether you've just had to deal with some demonic bullshit or not," Ulysses told her with a little nod. "That, or just assuming you're being drugged for, like, the first couple of weeks you're here."

Also based on real events.

"I heard that's not off the table, either," Lydia said. "Hallucinogenic vermin, and all."

Even if she kind of felt bad for these little gremlin things.

"Oh, someone's filled you in on the gremlins."

Ulysses had never actually gotten bit, himself. That was not going to stop him from making a face at just the idea, though. Like, the whole concept of it.

"I kind of feel bad for them," Lydia admitted. "It's not their fault they bite people, by the sounds of it."

Or that their venom made you think you were, generally, the most embarrassing thing imaginable.
