Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whatever aspect of the island made sure the weather was nice on picnic day didn't seem to be able to control the temperature. It wasn't freezing, but it would definitely more comfortable out on the lawn with a coat on. Thankfully, the conditions were just right for a bonfire in the center of the lawn, so people could gather and stay warm once they'd made their introductions.

Once the tables and chairs were set up and everything was properly glittered, all that was needed were people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Summer's seen me cook, if you want confirmation that it is," she said earnestly, also used to that. "And, like, if you want, I can show you how it works sometime?????????"

Grocery bills were much lower cooking Nina's way.

"Totally," Annie agreed with a nod. "All I can make is smoothies. My mom's kind of a health nut, so, like, even pasta was kind of verboten at home." Though given that neither of them had time or inclination to really cook, Annie had sometimes managed to Donna to allow boxed mac and cheese purely for convenience's sake.

"Pasta's like a lot of other food," Nina said, with a bit of a shrug. "It's all healthy enough in moderation, you know???????? The real problem comes from all the weird additives in the food???????"

In Nina's world, things were preserved by smoking them or canning them or salting them. Not... all of the weird things with names she couldn't pronounce.

"A loaf of bread shouldn't last for two weeks out on the counter," she said, a bit plaintively. "It's just wrong.........."

"It usually doesn't, with me around," Annie said, like the carb-loving monster she was. "But you're totally right - we put way too much stuff in our food."

And Annie's world was even worse, considering that Vought was in charge of a lot of commercial crops!

"I try not to eat anything I can't pronounce," she added, "with, like, exceptions for doughnuts 'cause I'm not going to like, interrogate the bakers about what's in their sprinkles or whatever." Plausible deniability, y'all.

"I get ice cream from Chilly Boulder sometimes and I do the same thing," she admitted. "I just, like, pretend really hard that it's fine, there's nothing in it that I can't say........"

Nina shivered dramatically.

"But when I make it myself, like, it's fine!!!!!!!!" Even though none of her cooking made sense! "Homemade, even if it's unhealthy, is a lot healthier than most of what's on the shelf!!!!!! What are some of your favourite dishes???????"

"Oh, gosh, I like anything with cheese," Annie admitted with a sigh. "And really, I'm kind of a big breakfast person? Like, my mom's really strict but my dad used to make pancakes sometimes when I was little and I still love them."

And there were their secret trips to Dunkin' Donuts, of course, which had followed once Annie was too busy on the weekends (and her father was not up for being glared at, not that Annie was aware) for pancakes.

"Pancakes and French toast are being added to this list of things to teach you," she said, with a laugh. "Quiche and omelets too!!!!!!!!!

She could work with breakfast foods!

"And cheese is, like, an amazing food group," she agreed. "Like, sure, it's fattening but it's so good and goes with so much!!!!!!!!!"

"Isn't French toast just bread you fry in a pan?" Annie wondered.

This is why she wasn't allowed to cook.

"Also, yeah, cheese is like its own food group. It goes with almost everything." Almost.

Almost was important, when it came to cheese.

"There's definitely more to French toast than that," Nina giggled. "Even though, like, if you only see the finished product I can totally see how you got there!!!!!!!"

And now she was getting hungry.

"Now I want pancakes and French toast," she confessed. "And, like, the picnic has a lot, but those aren't usually there!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I might have to make pancakes and/or French toast happen for myself tomorrow." Which meant dragging Diego out somewhere to find breakfast like a normal couple in search of brunch on a Sunday, except that definitely wasn't going to be able to happen for reasons. "Waffles, too. Like, they're all basically the same," they were not, "but there's nuance."

She wanted to be around if Annie ever said those three things were the same to Ignis. Ohmygosh.

"I might go bother Dad tomorrow," she mused. "He loves cooking, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind........ on the other hand, newbies in the common room......."

"Oh, man, I would people-watch if I were you," Annie told her, eyes wide. "I'm sure Liam's a pancake expert," she had no reason to believe this beyond Nina's word, "but these new kids seem like...baby deer or something."

Much like how Annie had when she'd first arrived, a scant three months ago. So jaded already.

"Right??????? And, like, he just got back from his anniversary trip with Miss Verity, so I probably shouldn't bother him anyway," she mused. "I could see if, like, Wayne's cooking tomorrow or if I should.......... food usually draws in the newbies!!!!!!!!!!"
