Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whatever aspect of the island made sure the weather was nice on picnic day didn't seem to be able to control the temperature. It wasn't freezing, but it would definitely more comfortable out on the lawn with a coat on. Thankfully, the conditions were just right for a bonfire in the center of the lawn, so people could gather and stay warm once they'd made their introductions.

Once the tables and chairs were set up and everything was properly glittered, all that was needed were people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was kind of both! Lydia had an aesthetic and she was often pretty sad!

"I've never had a roommate before," Lydia admitted, bordering on shy. Though she had fairly recently had to share her space with some ghosts, so she was pretty sure she wouldn't be too bad at it. "So you have to promise to tell me if I get on your nerves."

Which was unlikely, unless Belle had an objection to looking at black lace.

"I haven't either," Belle admitted. "I wasn't aware I would be having one here until just a few moments ago." She hadn't been aware of much of anything to do with this school, really.

"I'm sure we'll get along." And black lace was fine. It was certainly more normal looking than many other clothing items she was seeing so far today.

"Me neither, but I probably should have expected it," Lydia admitted. "People always have roommates at boarding school in books."

Which meant she was also hoping for heavy curtains on her extravagant boarding-school four-poster bed, of course.

Belle visibly perked up at the mention of books. "Have you read many books on the subject?"

"I'm not going to say many," Lydia decided slowly, "but yeah, I kind of had a...preconception of boarding school 'cause of books. Usually they're in England and you have to wear a uniform."

At least, in the books she had read.

"A uniform? Like a soldier? I haven't read many books on schools. I prefer adventures."

Complete with brave, dashing heroes. England, she assumed, was another land in this realm she'd never heard of.

"Kind of like a soldier but way less action-y," Lydia decided, punctuating that with a little flare of her be-gloved fingers. "Adventures are all right. I like poetry."

Really sad poetry. About sad things! Like winter, and night time.

"Oh." Less action was a little disappointing. Of course, Belle had no idea yet that this school would not be lacking in action opportunities.

"What sort of poetry?"

"Stuff about nature," Lydia said, vaguely. "I like how poems always seem to have more feeling in them than if someone wrote it out like a story."

Which meant that Lydia totally had a secret book of angsty poetry, herself. "Though I'd totally read an adventure poem." As long as someone died in it.

"I'm sure we could find some for you," Belle said cheerfully. "I didn't bring poetry books with me but there must be a shop or a library around here with books."

"It would be a pretty bad school if they didn't have a library," Lydia decided. And like, she wasn't one to judge what someone wore - how could she, she had a veil - but Belle didn't exactly dress like the kids at her old school, so she added, "I'm gonna guess your home is kind of different from this place?"

Lydia's sure was.

"It seems so," Belle said. Was she looking around for Five to glare in his direction briefly? A bit.

"My father decided sending me to another realm entirely was the safest course of action."

"Oh, see, I don't know if my dad knew he was sending me to another realm." Lydia liked that, she was just going to keep 'realm' as part of her vocabulary, now. "I think he just thought he was sending me to boarding school so I'd stop bugging my stepmother."

To be fair, nine times out of ten, Delia started it.

"Do you not get along? Stepmothers in stories always seem awful."

"I think they based all of those stepmothers in stories on Delia," Lydia told her, nodding seriously. "She's all right," such an admission, "but just can be - a lot."

"I see," said Belle, who had no experience in this area aside from stories. "I'm glad she isn't completely wicked, at least."

"Not completely," Lydia agreed. More irritating than wicked, at least. She mentally backtracked a little to what Belle had just said a moment ago, growing a little more serious. "Why'd your dad send you away?"

Because safety had been mentioned and that sure didn't sound...great.

"Ogres," Belle said. "There's been a war for hundreds of years but it's gotten worse recently. My mother..." Her voice trailed off before she started again. "There was an attack on the castle. I don't remember much of it. And after, Papa decided it wasn't safe for me anymore."

He'd also been trying to prevent her from having an adventure to recover her memories. But that could come in a canon catchup later!

"Ogres." Okay, she was pretty blasé about a lot of stuff, here, but ogres that necessitated the sending-away of people was actually kind of serious-sounding. "Oh, wow."

She'd get to the fact that Belle had lived in a castle before in a moment, instead offering a sensitive little, "Um - my mom is gone, too." Though it hadn't been ogres, but it had sort of started Lydia on the path to...you know, being Lydia. "Is your dad going to be okay by himself?"

"Papa will be fine," Belle said. "Although I'm not sure how I'm meant to contact him from here to be certain of that."

"I'm sorry about your mother," she added quietly to Lydia.

"I'm sorry about yours, too," Lydia said with a little inclination of her head. "But I'm glad you've still got your dad. We'll figure out a way to get ahold of him."

Maybe it was a matter of drawing a chalk door or something.

"Thank you. We'll figure it out."

Maybe they could research inter-realm communications while looking for books proving the existence of magic to throw at that terribly rude boy from earlier.
