"Well, barring horrifying things happening next week--" because in Fandom, you never knew, "--you will have your Ethics exam on Friday. As I said in the beginning, I'm only interested in your thought processes regarding the questions I ask you, not if it's the answer I myself would give."

He leaned back against his desk and it didn't spew candy canes or anything, which was a little strange this far into December, but Anakin ignored it. "Since you cannot really study for the exam, I thought we'd discuss a bit of what we'd seen on our school field trip on Wednesday. We helped out at a food bank, then shopped for children who weren't going to get gifts in this season of giving. Do you have a similar holiday in your own galaxies, and if so, is charitable giving a part of it? Why or why not?"

Do you have a charitable good works-related holiday?

"Well," Troy offered, "I'm Jehovah's Witness, so we don't actually celebrate, like, any holiday? But we still do some charity work around the community. So long as it doesn't have to do with, you know, those holidays."

So that whole presents thing was a huge no-no, but Troy was hoping his parents didn't find out about that.

Or the sweater thing.

Or the Christmas Troy.

Or Thanksgiving.

Or.pretty.much half.of what his heathen self was.going to indulge in this month.

"Why don't you celebrate holidays?" Anakin wondered.

Troy looked for a moment like if anyone actually had an answer to that, he would actually really appreciate it, because all he had was...

"It makes God mad."

Said exactly like someone who was a little mad himself that this was any kind of answer at all.

"We don't celebrate birthdays, either, and we can't drink...

"...but it helps."

"It helps what?" Anakin asked.

"We had Christmas once, when I was very very little, maybe about six or so?" Illyana answered. "I don't remember much, but I think it was more about family than anything charitable for outsiders."

"But I didn't really grow up with anything like that."

Anakin nodded. "Do you like the idea of it or no?"

'Yana tilted her head, thinking about it. "It's weird," she admitted. "I'm not opposed to it, but shouldn't it be a year-round thing? Not just because of a holiday?"

That was not the fact that Illyana was a fundamentally good person peeking out from under the ~~trauma~~ teenage sarcasm. Shut up.

"Well, it should be," Anakin agreed, "but at least some people remember once a year?"

"I... don't know?" The Horde was not big on holidays, and it was difficult to fill gaps in your knowledge when you weren't even sure where they were.

Anakin gave her a smile. "You don't get days off at home?"

"Not growing up." And boy did it show with her general inability to relax. "And no one's really told me if there's a reason for most of the parties I've been to since."

"Around here, there may not have been," Anakin said. "Would you like there to be more meaning behind celebrations or does that just add to your confusion?"

"It's more stressful." More meaning meant more ways to mess up. "It doesn't exactly help when everyone else knows what's going on and you're left guessing."

Anakin nodded. "I understand completely," he said. "So ask away. What do you want to know about this holiday?"

Adora shrugged helplessly, even though on some level it was kind of a relief to admit how much she didn't know about something without worrying too much about how someone was going to react. "Everything?"

"Well, making it very tricky, there are at least five holidays happening at the same time," Anakin said, ticking them off on his fingers. "Diwali, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Yule, and Christmas. They are mostly celebrating the defeat of light over darkness, which is symbolically important at this time of year because it's so dark in this part of the planet."

"Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuus Deaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Nina didn't need to greet him that way but she was going to.

Ow, his ears.

"Nina," he said with a tiny smile. "You're...perky."

"I always am!!!!!!!!" she said brightly. She was not. "But, like, why wouldn't I be right now??????????"

"No reason," Anakin admitted. "You just seem particularly so today."

"Well, we got to go shopping in first period," she confessed. "And I've been working on my class for next semester, which I'm super excited about!!!!!!!"

"What will you be teaching?" Anakin asked.

"It's a secret!!!!!!!" she crowed, delighted to be asked and to deny an answer. "But it's going to be amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

"Should I have a bad feeling about this?" Anakin teased.

"Nope!!!!!! I already got permission from the school board and the moose!!!!!!!!"

Which really begged the question of what sort of class she'd needed permission for from them but, like, that was part of the fun.

"That doesn't really do a lot to reassure me," Anakin admitted.

"I solemnly swear there are no field trips or violence involved???????" she tried.

"Better," Anakin said, smiling.

"It's going to be so great though," she said earnestly and, since the rest of the students were gone by now, Nina flung her arms about him in a hug.

"But I also need your permission for something, pleaaaase?????????"

"You cannot borrow the bus," Anakin said promptly.

Please. As if she’d ever ask for permission regarding The Bus!

Nina laughed. “Not what I was going to ask, but noted!!!!!!!”

"What do you want to ask?" Anakin replied.

"Would it be okay if I started a book club?????????" she asked earnestly.

"I can't think of a reason why you couldn't," Anakin said. "What kinds of books?"

Friiiiiiiiiiiiiiiday.
