Ethics, Friday, October 30, 2020

"Hello again, everyone," Anakin said, trying not to knock any of the jack o'lanterns over with the sweep of his cloak as he walked around the classroom. "I hope you enjoyed your time dumping me into very, very cold water."

He knew they had.

"Today we will not linger on the overwhelming guilt you no doubt feel over that--" he continued airily, "--so we'll move onto an ethics question instead. Since Halloween is tomorrow, we'll talk about stealing. Halloween, for those of you new to this dimension, is a day where people dress up in various costumes and then go door to door demanding candy."

It was clear by Anakin's expression that he had absolutely no idea why this was a thing.

"Sometimes people set out unsupervised bowls of candy, or tell you to help yourself to what they are holding out. My question to you is: do you feel obligated to only take a few and leave some for the people who will come behind you, or will you take it all?"

He could guess which way Eleanor was going to go.

"Are the people behind me already there, or just hypothetical?"

Look, it wasn't that Adora would take candy from a baby, but it would have to be a real baby she wasn't taking it from.

Well that was one way to derail Adora from her 'would probably only take one extra handful instead of two' answer. "Why would you put a kid in a gourd?"
