Student Assembly, Wednesday, October 20, 2020

Welcome back from vacation, kids, have a giant, giant maze made of hay bales and pallet crates! You'll just have to stand by the walls while your speakers explain themselves.

Anakin wove his way up to the stage and gazed out a bit at the maze, smirked slightly, and then turned to the students. "Today we're going to hear from two more of our local townspeople. You might know of them from when they had a medium-speed rickshaw chase with a sentient fox. Do not follow that example, but welcome Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams anyway. They are here to tell you about," he pulled out his notecard, "Wilderness Survival Skills."

"I have not missed this," Tahani noted, trying to keep her cute boots out of the hay.

Of course Illyana was here, she wanted to see what new idiocy was going to be showcased this week.

Two guys, one tall and brunette, one shorter and blonde, stepped onto the stage. "I'm Lt. Commander Steve McGarrett, and this is my partner, Detective Danny Williams," Steve began. "We're currently detailed down at the Trooper Station, but we're originally from Honolulu, Hawai'i--" his pronunciation was that of a native, "where we run a task force for the governor to make our state safe from traffickers, drug dealers, and terrorists."

Their Hawai'i was a lot more explode-y than regular Hawai'i. "Before that, though, I am a Navy SEAL, and that's the training we're drawing from to educate you today."

Aren't you excited about all the hay bales in front of you, kids?

"And we're doin' a maze," Danny sighed. Because his life had taken this turn.

"We're doing a navigational operation," Steve corrected.

"A maze," Danny replied more insistently.

"A navigational operation inside a maze," Steve conceded. "Being able to get yourself from one place to another without needing your phone's GPS is an essential life skill."

Danny just stared at him for a moment. "There are traps. Please be careful."

"They won't permanently maim you!" Steve said, "...but some are alive."

"We discussed this," Danny all but hissed, dragging Steve aside by the arm.

"I thought you just meant I couldn't get the boar!"

This could go on for a while, kids. Grab a compass and navigate from one side of the maze to the other!

Navigate the Maze

[personal profile] grenadesandohana 2020-10-21 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
The maze is the kind of overly complicated thing you'd expect from a Navy SEAL with not enough people to arrest or things to blow up. There was exactly one way to go from North to South, and one way to go from West to East, and they met in the middle of the maze, where there was a huge trap door that would drop you into a pit filled with yesterday's pumpkins and gourds. The only way to avoid setting off the pit was to climb along the hay bales like a monkey--or a SEAL.

Other traps for turning the wrong way include trip wires that dump lukewarm pumpkin spice lattes on you, garter snakes in the hay, spiders (that the guys didn't add but...hay bales), poison ivy in corners to rub against if you're looking too closely at your compass, regular, non-PSL inducing wire to climb over, around, and under, and the sound of a giant boulder that was chasing you...but Danny wouldn't let Steve add. There were also pallets around to help you over muddy sections or to climb up onto the top of the maze to get an eagle eye's view.

There was a compass for everyone, and cell phones were mysteriously jammed inside the maze. Good luck! It should be extremely challenging.

Tahani was terrible at this and was stuck about halfway through the doorway trying to figure out how to read the compass at all. "It won't stay still!" she wailed.

Yeah, okay. It took a while to get through the navigational operation maze because Miles figured it was important to not cheat and use his abilities to get through it all. And despite taking a few turns he was not doused with PSL as he was able to avoid those. The spiders didn't bother him at all really. The snakes did freak him out a bit at first.

In the end through he finally got through the navigational operation maze but definitely wasn't the first one through it.

Know what was helpful when stuck in an overly complicated maze?

Literally being magically gifted at navigating. And unlike Miles, she felt absolutely no moral qualms about using said abilities. Of course, having to navigate while maneuvering with a crutch was at times awkward and laborious, and as a result Juillenne wasn't particularly fast at getting out of there successfully. But the point was she was, eventually, successful.

Because it was totally Kamekona.

"Why not?" Steve asked. "He knows everyone that Adam doesn't."

And Adam had the personality of a piece of wet cardboard.

Re: Talk with Steve and Danny

Which was why Danny was giving him such a look. Because Adam's existence was as lacking as his personality.

"Yeah, 'good thing'." Adam was the worst and everyone knew it.

Except for that weird future period where he had a large side story because Steve decided to give him a job. Steve, explain.

Steve's terrible habit of extending second chances to people who didn't deserve them? See also: Doris, entire relationship with.

After navigating through the navigational operation maze, Miles settled down in a chair near Steve and Danny and just watched them bicker.

It's adorable really. He was even eating snacks because this was totally a reality TV show he'd watch.
