Badass Bitch Survival Guide; Tuesday, First Period [10/06].
By now, any of the students for Rosa's class would see a sign up on the door to the classroom and be able to take a pretty good guess as to what it meant. Well, there was a 50/50 chance that class was just straight up canceled, but in this instance, it was the other thing, said very distinctly in just a single word:
Gym.
At least this time it came without the threat of any punching, right? And when they arrived for the period, they'd find the gym all decked out for an obstacle course, with some very specific focuses.
"Stealth," Rosa said. "Because there's a point in every badass bitch's life where they're going to need to sneak into or out of something without being noticed."
Especially when they were taking this class and it was now October, but she'll get to that when they were a little closer to Halloween.
"And unless you're some kind of magical ninja from who even knows where and I don't care anyway, that sort of thing takes time, practice, and patience. So take a few minutes, stretch out, get limber, and then we're going to see just how well you can do getting through the courses without making a sound.
"First step: laser course. Only instead of real lasers, we've got ropes, and each rope has bells on it, so if you hit it, we know, I blow the whistle, and you start over. If you manage to make it through that, then we've got somemoddable obstacles made of nice creaky wood, so they're noisy, and if you're too noisy, back to the start. And then there's the window." Yes, she'd rigged up just a freestanding wall with a nice, easily-jammed-when-opened window in it. "Get this thing open and slip out without too much noise. Out of all this crap, this one's probably the most useful. Be careful, though, because there's some bells on the other side. Wouldn't want to set one off and have to start over again. And finally, if you think you're real bad ass, we have this rope climb. A rope. With a bell on it. If you can manage to get to the top without ringing the bell, what are you even doing in this class? There's probably nothing I can teach you. But if anyone wants to try, I'm all for it. Even minimal ringing on that one's good work.
"A few tips: don't be afraid to take your time. Focus on your breathing and the balls of your feet and keeping low to the ground. Don't let something like clothing or hair trip you up: a buckle scraped at the wrong moment could give you up like that. I know there's some of you who can probably do this without much trouble because of powers or abilities or whatever, which is great, get the extra practice in, but this is more for the people who actually don't have those same advantages. And to give you all an idea and prove that I'm not just full of shit, as someone without," presumably, anyway, cough, "any special abilities...I'll show you what I mean."
She shrugged off her jacket, tossed it aside, rolled her neck a little, and approached the first course. One deep breath, a pause, and then she swept through the tangle of cross-crossing ropes in a fluid motion that she hadn't spent all morning practicing to make sure it was perfect or anything, shut up, but, yeah, flawless, and thank god, because that would have sucked to biff it like that right in front of the class.
"Any questions?" she asked. "Take five, warm up, then we'll get started. You," she quirked her chin at literally anyone, there was no way you could tell if she had a particular person in mind, "you'll go first. And keep in mind, this might actually be useful to you later this month. For...reasons."
Anyone who'd spent more than a year here could probably guess, but let's not ruin the surprise for those who hadn't, yeah?

So she started warming up. It had been a long time since she'd utilized any of Cat's training, but hopefully her body would remember.
Course One: "Lasers" - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Course One: "Lasers" - BABSG, 10/06.
When he got through without ringing a bell he let out a sigh of relief.
Re: Course One: "Lasers" - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Course One: "Lasers" - BABSG, 10/06.
A portal appeared at her feet and traveled up her body until she vanished-- and a second disk materialized mid-air and sank towards the floor as she reappeared over by the window.
Course Two: Obstacles - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Course Two: Obstacles - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Course Two: Obstacles - BABSG, 10/06.
Jump from obstacle to obstacle, that's what.
So yeah, this was where Jules had to eventually admit defeat with a frustrated groan.
Re: Course Two: Obstacles - BABSG, 10/06.
"Obviously," she offered at some point to no one in particular, "there can be exceptions made for certain aspects of this training."
Although there would definitely be respect points earned for whatever was attempted.
Re: Course Two: Obstacles - BABSG, 10/06.
In the meantime, she was definitely less mobile than her classmates, that was for sure.
"When you say exceptions," Jules said, in response to that remark that had been offered to no one in particular, "what do you mean?"
Re: Course Two: Obstacles - BABSG, 10/06.
Course Three: The Window - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Course Three: The Window - BABSG, 10/06.
Having the proportionate strength of a Spider? Well...
Here's the thing. When the window stuck a bit, Miles put a little more effort into it. But not being fully used to using his new abilities that window let out a loud SCREECH and could definitely not be covered up.
Re: Course Three: The Window - BABSG, 10/06.
She slowly eased the window up, opting for smooth motion over speed. After all, Rosa hadn't said anything about potentially being seen, and had said to take their time.
There were a few small creaks and groans but nothing too loud, and the nice part about being small of her age was the ability to slip into tiny spaces.
The bells on the other side? Carefully stepped over and around; the shadows of movement taught to her years ago by a Cat who should have been a dancer, not a weapon.
Course Four: The Rope - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Course Four: The Rope - BABSG, 10/06.
Her first attempt, she got maybe two feet off the ground before it gave a loud jangle. Same with the second, though she made it maybe four feet up on the third.
There wasn't any way she could get to the top without ringing that bell. She could maybe get partway up the rope, but she simply didn't have the upper arm strength to make it to the top slowly enough to stop it from ringing.
...Unless the bell wasn't there.
Illyana sat down on the floor, looking up at the bell. She squinted at it, a small circle like her earlier Stepping Disk in her left hand. The second one appeared right under the bell, and slowly, with her right hand, she guided it up until it encompassed the bell and it vanished, to reappear in her left hand.
She let out a whoop of glee, set it carefully on the floor, and scaled the rope as fast as she could. Once at the top, she recalled the bell to her with another pair of disks, reattached it to the rope, and then just... let go.
A stepping disk swallowed up her fall, depositing her safely back on the floor a second later.
Of course she was a show-off; this was Illyana. At least she hadn't used any of her more flashy magic?
Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
Re: Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
Yeah how do you describe this to anyone else?
"-really weird stuff. Do I need to make up for any assignments?"
Miles may one day learn that being a badass bitch probably meant not worrying about missing class.
Re: Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
Sure, she didn't know all the details, but she knew enough, and a big chunk of what she did know was that Miles' really weird stuff had involved rifts in her kitchen...and considering what else she knew and his performance in class today...
Well, it didn't exactly take a detective...
And maybe one day Miles may learn that you never asked Rosa Diaz if you needed to make up for any assignments unless you one-hundred percent wanted to be given a made-up make-up bullshit assignment.
"Well, you missed a pretty important one," she said. "Everyone made their own crowbars down at the forge, and we'll actually be using them in class coming up, so you'll probably have to go find Miss Blackstone and talk to her about that so you're properly equipped." Make the kid do extra work and bother Blackstone at the same time? Too perfect. "Plus a report exploring at least five different beneficial uses for a crow bar and why it's important for a Badass Bitch to know how to use one and have it in her arsenal."
Re: Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
He nodded and closed up his book. "Um. Also I haven't seen him since he got back... Mr. O'Hara is okay, right? He's not glitching or anything right?"
Gee. Asking Diaz something about her personal life. This should go well.
Re: Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
But any ounce of compassion she might have had evaporated pretty quickly after that. Not only somehting personal, but something personal that could be traced pretty easily to His Fault.
So that slightly-too-long look was back.
"He's fine."
Besides being outdone by a talking bird over the weekend, but that was clearly not anyone's business.
A slight crease of worry might have appeared on Rosa's brow at the word glitching, though, because so help her, if this whole Stupid Brooklyn thing had linger effects that they needed to be worried about...
Re: Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
"Right. Good. Glad he's doing okay. I'm just gonna..."
And he gestured to the door, wordlessly shrugged but in a nervous kind of way and just backed out of the door.
Re: Talk to Rosa - BABSG, 10/06.
It had better be fine.
