Ethics, Friday, September 4, 2020

"Hello, everyone," Anakin said, sweeping into the room. "It's gratifying to see so many familiar faces in class today because it lets me know that you are not afraid of asking tough questions of yourselves and your fellow students." He leaned against the desk at the front of the class. "For those of you who don't know me, I'm Anakin Skywalker, the Dean of Students and your ethics teacher for this semester. Traditionally this is the week for introductions, but it's Friday and you're already probably very tired of this."

He smiled. "Too bad. We're going to break into groups of three based on how you sign in and play a game. You must come up with two things the three of have in common--the stranger the better. Perhaps you're all from the same dimension, or have all been bitten by a gremlin, or your names all have the same number of vowels, or you've all eaten the Monday breakfast that Wayne makes. Then you get to tell the group what your two things are, and we'll decide which is the oddest."

He smiled again. "And since this is an ethics class, you must choose whether you are telling us things you actually have in common or just two things you made up and agreed to."

As students who had taken the course before knew already, everything was a series of interlocking tests in Anakin's class.

"You may begin."

Troy was there to start by eyeing the other members of his group speculatively to see of he could maybe make a good guess for what they could potentially have in common.

Eleanor flopped down in her chair and gave Anakin a little glare at the 'familiar faces' comment.

"Can we just make up stuff and be done with it?"

Clearly she did not care to get this done the right way.

"That," Wei Wuxian said sternly, wagging a finger at Eleanor, would be unethical. He broke into a grin. "Let's do it." He turned to Troy. "T-Bone, you make something up first and we'll each make up something to match it."

Bold move, turning it to T-Bone for the first one. But Troy, feeling like he was up to the challenge, nodded solemnly and gave it a moment of thought.

"Maybe," he ventured slowly, then a grin of his own blossomed on his face with an idea, "we can all say we're ghosts!"

Being a ghost would be pretty dope.

"Or, hey," he pointed to Wei Wuxian, "what about that teleporting thing that you and me can both totally do?" His eager grin turned toward Eleanor. "You want in on that?"

"But I am a ghost," Wei Wuxian said solemnly. "I've died twice and I live on a hill of bones." Well, he had.

Illyana? Be emotionally honest and seek connection with people she didn't know?

AHAHAHAHA. No.

So she had a handful of lies and half-truths that she was mulling over while she waited for the rest of her group.

"Yeah, so I'm not that great at lying," Adora said by way of introduction. "So if we're making things up someone else should do the talking."

"I can lie," Illyana offered, "--but you're going to need to control your face while I do it."

She'd noticed that you're...expressive, Adora.

It wasn't her fault she had a ridiculous face.

"I can do that." It wouldn't look particularly natural, but you learnt when to school your expression in the Horde.

"We still need a third!" Yana yelled at the rest of the class, rolling her eyes at the slowness of people to get going.

"Ugh. While we wait...I doubt we're from the same universe, so that's out as a truth or a believable lie." Illyana squinted at her, almost looking past her, really. "Your magic doesn't look right for my world."

[OOC: let me know if that's OK, I can edit! I didn't see anything on Adora's posts or profile if someone would be able to sense her She-Ra magic.]

"Think anyone will buy it if we tell them we're all natural blondes?" Mae suggested, coming over.

She might not agree she looked like a cat, but she definitely knew she didn't look like a blonde.

"I mean, maybe we could convince them that yours is a dye job," Illyana mused. "--But that would require a lot of dye."

"Maybe we start off with obvious real ones? Like, we all participated in paint ball yesterday, or we're all sapient personages. And then throw in something that's still believable...like... I don't know. We all like sweets. Or speak multiple languages."

"Good," Illyana approved. "And it might even be true... that day might have been a full moon in another universe that's not the one we were born in."

Choosing your words (and lies), like magic, was all about technicalities and precision.

"We all participated in the paint ball ambush yesterday. We were all born on a full moon. What do we want to say for the third?"

"Or your planet has more than one moon." Because, yeah, that was taking getting used to...as was the whole sun thing, aaaand now Adora was wondering if the planet she'd been stolen from as a baby even had a moon.

She shook her head. "None of us are from around here?" she tried. "Some of the people here seem surprised by magic, or people not being human."

Freya was already feeling a little bad about the fact that her inclusion in one of these groups made at least a few easy details a bit harder.

"I'm sure we can come up with something," she ventured hopefully. "Maybe what floor we live in in the dorms? Thoigh that's not much for oddness... "

Julius looked at his partners, frantically trying to figure out what they could all have in common. Sorry, Freya. If he wasn't hiding, at least two of them could have 'non-human' under their belt.

Still, he was pretty sure that most of his experiences growing up did not match the norm. Unless there were other dragons in the class?

...Ugh. Even worse.

"Uh. I know that Freya and I don't come from this version of Earth?" he suggested. "I'm from the future?" Yup. Still felt weird to say.

Arabella could be non-human, but that was a secret. Hey, there was something she and Julius had in common...not that either of them knew that.

"I'm not from this version of Earth, either," Arabella said. "Mine has magic. But I'm not from the future."

"Also magic!" Julius said, excitedly. "Err. Where I'm from, I mean."

Unless Arabella could see magic, in which case, between the seal that engulfed him like a nasty curse and then his own intrinsic nature, he was definitely Full Of Magic.

"Magic also for me," Freya added, with a note of excitement that this seemed to be coming together, a grin and flicker of her tail. "So there's those things: not from this version of Earth," or even Earth at all for her, but it still certianly worked, "and magic. I know that Julian and I have also been trained to fight, if I'm remembering properly." She nodded to Arabella. "Have you had training like that?"

"Yeah, my parents definitely taught me to take care of myself," Arabella said. "You never know what creeps are out there. Hey, can you guys use magic or are you just from somewhere that has magic? Because I can use it, but, uh, I can't really say anything about it beyond that for family privacy reasons."

Those reasons being 'we don't want the government to stick Arabella in a lab,' mostly.

"Errr." Oh look. Julius's expression was very awkward right now. "I...can? I'm just not. Very good," he mumbled.

Thank goodness he wasn't over there with the other teams that had gone with lying. He was terrible at it.

"My siblings are better. But, umm. Same. Can't really talk about it."

Freya's head tilted a little, finding the secrecy aspect of all of this a little fascinating...and confusing.

"I'm still learning some of my magic," she admitted, "but I can use some. It's a well-known aspect of being a dragon knight, though, there's no stigma about my discussing it."

Freya felt so bad for throwing off a potentially good commin ground that she almost thought about lying and saying there were, but she just couldn't bring herself to do it.

"There are certain rituals and spells that are known only to Burmecians," she ventured with her own tone of hope now, "that we don't share with others. Not secret, but exclusive, at least. Would that count?"
