Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the heat continued to bear down on the lawn, many of the tables and chairs were set up in the spots where there was shade, so no one got overheated or anything. That would be very rude for the first day in Fandom, after all.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Troy looked up from his burger.

"I did just get here," he said, sounding slightly amazed, looking at least a little dazed. "How'd you know?"

A beat.

"Right." He lifted a finger like he figured out the secret. "The bus, probably."

Karolina nodded, with a little chuckle. "Also I don't recognize you, so the odds of you being one of the students who've been here for longer are kinda low." But not non-existent, because Fandom. "I'm Karolina, I'm the counselor here. Hi."

"Hiiii," said Troy, now regarding her with a little bit of suspicion. "Counselor. I'm not...in trouble, am I?"

"Oh, nope!" Karolina replied brightly. "I'm just here to say hi and to give you a small welcome gift to get you started at the school and on the island."

Meaning the small, glittery gift bag she was now pulling from her basket and holding out for him. Inside it was a map of the island, another of where all the classrooms were located at the school, a $5 gift card to the Perk, and a handwritten little card with Karolina's contact info on it.

"Oh, I like gifts!"

Growing up not celebrating birthdays or Christmas could do that to a kid, and Troy's face lit up as he reached out to take the gift back with both hands, and then he looked at Karolina eagerly.

"Do I get to open it no--"

Halfway through that, it was like Troy suddenly remembered that he was trying to be cool. This was a new school, and people might not know he was actually cool, so...

He set the gift down on the table and leaned back casually.

"I mean," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "That's cool. Thanks."
