Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the heat continued to bear down on the lawn, many of the tables and chairs were set up in the spots where there was shade, so no one got overheated or anything. That would be very rude for the first day in Fandom, after all.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yes to free food. Arabella assembled herself a plate of everything that looked good and found a place to sit, then pulled out her phone to send some texts.

To Nevada and Catalina: Don't tell Mom, but I'm rooming with a boy.

Her phone immediately started blowing up with incoming texts, so she decided to shelve her debate on whether to ask Bern for a background check on her new roommate--who might not even exist in her world, apparently--in favor of shoving her phone back in her pocket and eating delicious food.

"You seem unfamiliar," Tahani said. "Hello. I'm Tahani al-Jamil."

Yes, she did sound like Arabella should know who that was, but that was just how Tahani talked.

"Arabella Baylor," Arabella said, and then added, because of Tahani's tone, "House Baylor." It was usually Primes who sounded like you should already know who they were, in Arabella's experience. "Yeah, I'm new."

"Well, welcome to the very strangest boarding school I've ever heard of," Tahani said. "Where are you from?"

"Houston," Arabella said. "Uh, Texas. What about you?"

Arabella had guessed England from the accent, but she didn't want to assume. "Are there a lot of English people at this school? There was another British girl on the shuttle with me. Maeve? Did you meet her yet?"

"Maeve. Pink hair, not a cat," Tahani said, nodding. "I met her. Most people aren't British, but some have oddly British accents from somewhere else."

Because sci-fi loved some fake British accents.

"Hi there!" Karolna greeted her cheerfully, coming over with her basket. "You're a new arrival, right?"

Karolina had actually done this thing enough to be able to tell the new kids from the old students, but it was a good opening line.

"Is it that obvious?" Arabella asked. The student body seemed small enough that it probably was.

"Kinda?" Karolina admitted with a little chuckle and a light shrug. "I can tell the new kids from the old by whose faces I don't recognize."

Not that that was always a solid strategy here, but she didn't want to mention that right now.

"I'm Karolina, I'm the guidance counselor here at the school."

"Oh, hi," Arabella said with a smile, because she could not possibly be in trouble already. "I'm Arabella Baylor.

So far, none of the new kids were in trouble yet. She was safe.

"Great to meet you, Arabella," Karolina beamed, already reaching into her basket. "I have a little welcome gift for you, just to get you started on the island. Here you go."

She presented Arabella with a glittery gift bag. Inside it would be a map of the island, another of where all the classrooms were located at the school, a $5 gift card to the Perk, and a handwritten little card with Karolina's contact info on it.
